Lyrics Below… Spanish lyrics followed by a complete English translation. “Purifícanos” (Purify Us) is a very special song to me, born out of prayer during the years I was pastoring a church where several members of our congregation were Latino and did not speak English. Because I spoke Spanish, I longed to give them something meaningful that we could all sing together, regardless of our native language.
I prayed that the Lord would give me a song that would bless our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters and unite our congregation in His presence. When I sat down with my guitar, this song simply began to flow. It was not translated from English. The words and melody came together naturally in Spanish, expressing a prayer that transcends language.
The song begins with a cry for purification: “Purifícanos, oh Dios, con el fuego de amor, cámbianos” — “Purify us, O God, with the fire of love; change us.” It is a prayer that God's love would cleanse and transform our hearts.
The next movement becomes a petition for salvation and divine help: “Oh Dios mío, sálvanos, con tu poder, ayúdanos” — “O my God, save us; with Your power, help us.” From there, the song turns toward adoration of our Savior and a longing to be filled with His love.
These simple prayers are repeated throughout the song, allowing the words to become a continuing meditation upon God's mercy, transforming power, and presence.
There has always been something particularly precious to me about this composition. I believe the Lord gave it to me for a purpose, and I sense a special peace in its melody and message. The organic nylon-string Spanish guitar, gentle Latin-Caribbean percussion, and flowing vocal harmonies create an atmosphere of quiet reflection and prayer.
Even if you do not understand Spanish, I invite you to listen with an open heart. May God's Spirit touch you through this music, and may His peace rest upon you as you listen.
