GLP-1s, Skinny Culture, and the Question Every Woman Should Ask Herself with Natalie Jill
The Hormone Solution | Menopause, Perimenopause, & Women's Midlife HealthShow Notes
Something happened after my conversation with Natalie Jill on her podcast, Midlife Conversations. Women flooded my inbox and my community, not with questions about dosing or side effects, but with something closer to relief. They finally felt heard. That reaction told me this conversation needed a second chapter, so I'm bringing you the rest of it here, along with some of the raw, honest messages from women in my community who are done being quietly shamed for a choice that has changed their health and their lives. In this episode, Natalie and I go back to where it all started. We talk about the judgment that follows women who use GLP-1s, the double standard that shows up the second "my body, my choice" gets applied to weight loss medication, and the uncomfortable question underneath all of it: who actually gets to decide what a healthy body should look like. Natalie shares her own story, one you probably haven't heard, about postpartum depression, an autoimmune diagnosis she didn't know she had, and the moment she decided to stop living from problem and start living from possibility. We also get into the part of this conversation that matters most right now. Yes, there is a subset of women glamorizing extreme thinness, and yes, it deserves a real conversation. But we push back on the idea that this means GLP-1s themselves are the problem. What if the real issue isn't the medication at all, but what we've always done as a culture when a tool works too well. This one gets personal fast. We talk about breast implants, boundaries, midlife reinvention, and why some of the most confident women you know still get triggered by a stranger's opinion online. If you've ever felt defensive explaining a health choice you didn't owe anyone an explanation for, this episode is for you. In This Episode, We Cover: The real feedback from women in the Midlife Solutions community after the first GLP-1 conversation aired Why judgment shows up hardest around weight loss medication, and where that double standard comes from Natalie Jill's personal story of postpartum depression, an undiagnosed autoimmune condition, and her early forties rock bottom The mindset shift Natalie calls living in "possibility" versus living in "circumstance" Whether GLP-1s are fueling extreme thinness or simply exposing disordered patterns that already existed Natalie's honest take on who GLP-1s are right for, and the one type of user she has real concerns about The surprising parallel between GLP-1 judgment and Natalie's own experience with breast implant illness How to tell the difference between being triggered and being genuinely misinformed Why midlife might be the first time in a woman's life she stops apologizing for her choices Who This Episode Is For This episode is for the woman using a GLP-1 who is tired of defending herself to people who have never walked in her shoes. It's for the woman who hasn't tried one yet but keeps getting pulled into the noise online and wants a clearer, calmer perspective. And it's for anyone who has ever felt the sting of being judged for a health decision, whether that decision involved a medication, a surgery, or simply choosing what works for her own body.

In this episode, I sit down with Ann and Anoop Asok to talk about stubborn belly fat, metabolism, reverse dieting, muscle, stress, and why so many women end up trapped in a cycle of eating less and working harder without getting the results they want. We get into why midlife body composition can change even when your habits have not, what years of restrictive dieting may be doing beneath the surface, and why the answer may not be another round of keto, fasting, or cutting calories. We also talk about the women who insist they are barely eating and still cannot lose weight, why "skinny" does not necessarily mean metabolically healthy, and what it can look like when you finally stop fighting your body and start working with it instead. In This Episode, We Talk About: Why belly fat can suddenly appear in midlife The difference between being thin and being metabolically healthy Why the same diet that worked in your 20s may stop working later What years of yo-yo dieting may do to your metabolism Why eating less is not always the answer The problem with extreme fasting and restrictive diets Why muscle becomes so important for body composition after 40 Strength training versus endless cardio Why protein can change cravings and appetite The role of blood sugar and insulin in stubborn belly fat Why stress may be sabotaging your results What happens when women keep pushing harder despite eating less The idea behind reverse dieting Why some women actually begin eating more before focusing on fat loss How to approach food without living on a rigid meal plan Why sustainable fat loss has to look different from another quick-fix diet

But here is the question we do not ask nearly enough: Is your body actually getting what it needs from that protein? Because there is a big difference between eating protein, digesting protein, getting enough of the right amino acids, and actually giving your body what it needs to maintain muscle as you age. And this becomes especially important in perimenopause and menopause, when preserving muscle already starts getting harder. In this clip you will hear from the episode, with Angelo Keely, co-founder and CEO of Kion, where we get into something I realized I did not understand nearly as well as I thought I did: essential amino acids. We break down what amino acids actually are, why some proteins are considered "complete" while others are not, why collagen does not count the way many women think it does, and why protein quality may matter just as much as the number of grams you are tracking. Then we get into the part I think is especially important for midlife women: what happens when you are dieting, using a GLP-1, struggling to eat enough protein, or simply noticing that maintaining muscle is getting harder than it used to be. There are some very surprising pieces of research in this conversation that completely changed the way I think about protein supplementation. In This Episode, We Talk About: What amino acids actually are and why your body needs them
Most women enter perimenopause thinking about hot flashes, weight gain, sleep, brain fog, and hormones. Very few are told that this may also be one of the most important cardiovascular windows of their lives. And that is a problem. Heart disease remains the number one killer of women, yet women are still being underdiagnosed, dismissed, and evaluated using systems that were largely built around male cardiovascular disease. In this episode, I sit down with preventative cardiologist Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum to talk about what women actually need to understand about their hearts in perimenopause and menopause. We get into the surprising signs that may tell you more about your cardiovascular health than you realize, why looking healthy does not necessarily mean your arteries are healthy, and why the standard cholesterol panel may not be giving you the full picture. We also have a very important conversation about estrogen, HRT, cholesterol, inflammation, blood sugar, hot flashes, family history, pregnancy history, and why simply putting on an estrogen patch is not the same thing as protecting your heart. This is one of those episodes I want every woman to hear before she assumes, "I'm healthy. I exercise. My heart is probably fine." Because there may be things happening beneath the surface long before you ever develop obvious cardiovascular disease. In This Episode, We Talk About: Why heart disease in women is still so often missed Why women can look incredibly healthy and still be at risk The cardiovascular clues hidden in your pregnancy history A genetic cholesterol marker many women have never had tested Why your standard LDL number may not tell the whole story The additional blood markers Dr. Steinbaum wants women asking for The surprising connection between hot flashes and cardiovascular risk What starts changing in the arteries during perimenopause Why palpitations, shortness of breath, and subtle chest symptoms deserve attention How declining estrogen may affect cardiovascular health Why HRT is important but not a free pass The mistake of assuming estrogen alone protects you from heart disease Why some commonly used cardiovascular tests may miss disease in women The type of plaque that can be especially important in female heart disease Why cardiovascular prevention needs to become far more personalized The controversy around LDL, ApoB, and statins Why Dr. Steinbaum does not treat numbers in isolation The cardiovascular tests she believes women should know about Why perimenopause may be the moment to start paying much closer attention
