Overreaction Season: Night One

Frankly Hockey

Show Notes

Night one of the 2026-27 NHL regular season is in the books and John Buccigross and Frank Seravalli are back with four overreactions. Or are they? They'll dive into Tristan Jarry's shaky season debut and whether the Oilers are the same team just with a new head coach? Who was more overwhelmed in their Leafs debut: Gavin McKenna or Darren Raddysh? Are the Blackhawks toast without Connor Bedard? And ... maybe Florida will be just fine with Jacob Markstrom?

Bucci has the latest news and notes from around the NHL with Franks 'n Beans.

Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross break down absolute cinema from Ottawa, as the Senators fan base showed up and showed out for Brady Tkachuk’s return. Panthers coach Paul Maurice said “let it fly,” and they certainly did with chants, jeers and playoff atmosphere as the Sens put a hurting on the Panthers. The boys also discussed Connor McDavid’s chase of 200 points, Ben Kindel’s medical update, the NHL’s need for replay assist and mourned the loss of Ron Duguay.

What a night ahead in Ottawa, where the Sens' Army will welcome (?) back Brady Tkachuk after his offseason trade to the Panthers. What should the reception be in the nation's capital? Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross discuss, also Kirill Marchenko's return to Columbus, Ben Kindel's scary medical episode in Utah and Dylan Larkin's reported 10-team trade list. Where makes sense for Larkin to land?

On Monday night, it was Gavin McKenna vs. Ivar Stenberg, a battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the 2026 NHL Draft. That also occurred 10 years to the day after the debate that raged on at the time between No. 1 Auston Matthews and No. 2 Patrik Laine, when what appeared to be the second coming of the Finnish Flash scored three goals to lead a come-from-behind Winnipeg win. How times have changed? A decade later, Laine is out of the league. Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross also discuss the Rangers' hot start at the Garden and any potential concern for Mathew Barzal's lingering injury on the Island.

It feels like a consequential week for the Winnipeg Jets with Connor Hellebuyck's suspension due to end on Friday. But the Jets have some mechanisms at their disposal in the CBA to prevent him from joining the team right away. Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross will discuss all that, along with Danila Yurov's trade bait, Nikita Zadorov's healthy scratch and the Flyers finally getting on the board.

Growing pains. Every NHL team and every young NHL player has them. Gavin McKenna was benched by coach Jim Hiller on Thursday night, playing a season-low 6:36 and then Hiller fell on the sword. Is he covering for McKenna? In Vancouver, Zeev Buium has also struggled of late after signing a massive contract extension over the summer. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Artyom Levshunov is finally blossoming in a big way - making us re-think the 2024 NHL Draft? Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross discuss.
