The Secret To A Life Of Longevity, Health, Happiness & Abundance (It’s Not What You Think!)
The Alcohol-Free Advantage with Andy RamageShow Notes
How do you want to check out of life?
Do you want to slowly limp out as your health and energy decline over the years, or do you want to live fully, stay strong, and keep your momentum right up until the very end?
In this episode, I explore a powerful idea that completely reframed the way I think about health and longevity.
Inspired by a conversation with former professional footballer and elite performance coach Christian Dailly, I share a simple graph that explains how most people experience life physically and mentally.
If you want to live a life full of strength, clarity, and momentum, this episode will give you a powerful perspective shift.
What You’ll Learn In This Episode The powerful longevity graph that explains how most people age Why many adults slowly “rust out” over time The hidden role alcohol plays in long term health decline How hangovers quietly destroy consistency with exercise and nutrition Why small lifestyle habits compound massively over decades The difference between simply living longer and living well Why alcohol free living restores consistency and clarity How to build momentum in your health and wellbeing The inspiring philosophy of “wear out rather than rust out” How to maximise the quality of your life for decades to come Timestamps 00:00 – 02:00 How do you want to check out of life? 02:00 – 03:30 The return of the morning Instagram lives 03:30 – 05:30 The power of simplicity in health and training 05:30 – 07:30 The longevity graph explained 07:30 – 09:30 How alcohol quietly degrades health over time 09:30 – 11:30 Hangovers, exercise, and nutrition choices 11:30 – 13:30 Why small habits compound over decades 13:30 – 15:30 The difference between rusting out and wearing out 15:30 – 16:30 Building a life of strength, health, and longevity 16:30 – End A simple reflection on how you want to live your life

Have you ever woken up after a night of drinking and struggled to piece together exactly what happened? Well, I've got a story for you. Wind back the clock about 15 years, when I was still working in the City, entertaining clients and living what I thought was a pretty successful life. On the outside, everything looked great. But behind the scenes, I was beginning to question my relationship with alcohol. And then came one particular night that I would never forget. Although, rather ironically, there was quite a lot of it I couldn't remember! What followed was an unforgettable conversation with my lovely wife, Tara, that left me well and truly rumbled. In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I'm sharing one of my most embarrassing drinking stories and exploring the surprisingly powerful lesson hidden beneath the humour. Because sometimes, the moments we laugh off are the very ones we need to take seriously. What You'll Learn Why I began questioning my relationship with alcohol What happens when drinking leaves gaps in our memories The unexpected ways alcohol can affect our relationships Why seemingly harmless excuses can have a bigger impact than we realise What one embarrassing experience taught me about trust and authenticity Timestamps: 00:00 – 02:00 Looking back at my drinking days in the City 02:00 – 04:00 The problem with missing memories 04:00 – 07:30 The night I got completely rumbled 07:30 – 10:00 The lesson behind the laughter 10:00 – 12:30 Alcohol, trust and the stories we tell 12:30 – 13:30 The freedom of being authentically you 13:30 – End Your next alcohol-free adventure Your Next Step Have you ever had one of those moments that made you stop and question your relationship with alcohol? “I bet you're fun at parties!” It's one of those classic comments that people who don't drink have probably heard at least once. But what happens when it comes from a 17-year-old who's had a few drinks, and you're standing there happily enjoying your alcohol-free beer? Well, that's exactly what happened to me at a recent family party. And I have to admit, it was absolutely hilarious! But once I'd stopped laughing, it got me thinking. Why have we become so convinced that drinking equals fun and not drinking equals boring? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I'm challenging one of the biggest cultural assumptions about alcohol and exploring what it really means to have fun. Because after almost 12 years alcohol-free, I've discovered something rather surprising about where the real joy in life comes from. And I think you might be surprised too. What You'll Learn: Why we associate drinking with having fun How our beliefs about alcohol are shaped from an early age The difference between perceived fun and genuine enjoyment Why going alcohol-free doesn't mean giving up your social life A simple reflection to help you rethink what truly brings you joy Timestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 The cultural connection between alcohol and fun 03:00 – 05:00 A hilarious encounter at a family party 05:00 – 07:30 Is drinking really as much fun as we think?07:30 – 09:00 Rediscovering genuine enjoyment 09:00 – 11:30 The fun versus boring exercise 11:30 – 12:30 Challenging the stories we tell ourselves 12:30 – End: Your next step on the alcohol-free adventure
What if the biggest thing holding you back from achieving your dreams is something you’ve never even considered? We all have those ideas. The business we want to start, the adventure we keep putting off, the changes we promise ourselves we’ll make one day. But why do some people turn those dreams into reality while others spend years talking about them? In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I explore a powerful connection between going alcohol-free and taking transformative action. I’m also celebrating what might just be one of the greatest sporting achievements of my life at the age of 52. And trust me, it’s probably not what you’re expecting! From unexpected victories to inspiring stories of people who dared to do something different, this episode might just make you rethink what’s possible when you take alcohol out of the equation. What You'll Learn: Why some dreams never make it beyond the talking stage The surprising connection between alcohol and ambition What can happen when you find the courage to take action How small changes can lead to extraordinary opportunities Why it might not be too late to pursue the life you've imagined Timestamps: 00:00 – 02:00 The difference between dreaming and doing 02:00 – 05:30 My greatest sporting achievement at 52 05:30 – 08:00 When an idea becomes reality 08:00 – 10:00 What might be holding you back? 10:00 – 11:30 Turning dreams into action 11:30 – End A new chapter and what's coming next And if this episode has inspired you to explore coaching, whether you're starting from scratch or looking for a more meaningful career, come and discover our training programmes at Coach Business School. Yesterday, I turned 52. And at 5:30 in the morning on my birthday, I found myself thinking about the 32-year-old version of me and everything I wish I could go back and tell him. Back then, I was still drinking. On the outside, many of the traditional markers of success were there, but underneath, things were beginning to tell a very different story. So in this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I’m sharing some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over those 20 years. Some are about alcohol. Some are about health, success and the stories we tell ourselves. And some have completely changed the way I approach life. If you’re somewhere around where I was at 32, questioning your relationship with alcohol or simply wondering what the next chapter could look like, this episode is for you. What You'll Learn: What I wish I could tell my 32-year-old self Why some of the stories we tell ourselves deserve challenging What I discovered about alcohol and success How my perspective has changed over the last 20 years The principle I now believe can transform almost anything in your life Timestamps: 00:00 – 03:00 52 today and reflecting on 32 03:00 – 07:00 The stories I used to tell myself 07:00 – 14:00 Challenging what I thought I knew 14:00 – 20:00 Alcohol, success and doing things differently 20:00 – 23:00 A connection I wish I’d understood sooner 23:00 – 27:00 The lesson I’m taking into my 52nd year 27:00 – End Just warming up If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend, colleague, or loved one who might need to hear it. What happens when you bring a group of alcohol-free adventurers together and walk 119 kilometres of one of the world’s most ancient spiritual paths? I recently returned to the Camino de Santiago, this time with seven fellow pilgrims, for five days of walking, talking, reflecting and experiencing everything this incredible journey had to throw at us. And there was a lot to reflect on. In this episode of The Alcohol-Free Advantage, I’m taking you onto the Camino with me to explore one of the less obvious gifts that can emerge from going alcohol-free and how it can start opening doors to experiences you might once have talked yourself out of. I’ll also share some of the lessons my fellow pilgrims taught me along the way, a rather convincing cheesecake mirage and the moment our peaceful adventure suddenly descended into complete chaos. What You'll Learn: One of the most overlooked gifts of going alcohol-free What walking the Camino can teach us about ourselves Why adventure and reflection can be such a powerful combination Some unexpected lessons from my fellow pilgrims What happened when things didn’t quite go according to plan Timestamps: 00:00 – 04:00 The Alcohol-Free Camino begins 04:00 – 09:00 An overlooked alcohol-free advantage 09:00 – 17:00 Saying yes to bigger adventures 17:00 – 24:00 Lessons from the Camino 24:00 – 30:00 Reflections from my fellow pilgrims 30:00 – 33:00 The mysterious cheesecake 33:00 – End The Unexpected Final Challenge If this episode has got you thinking about your own next adventure, I’m also running a free workshop about coaching. Whether you’re curious about coaching for your own development, want to use these skills in your existing career, or are considering becoming a coach yourself, it could be a brilliant place to start.
