Homebrewed: An Australian Music Podcast

Show Notes

This week, we’re stepping away from artists to check in with someone who plays a crucial role in our music scene. Over the last few years, Shanae Milne has poured herself into the local and national music industry - first as a punter and now as a professional. Whether she's running workshops for local emerging artists, managing socials for national icons, or documenting her own experiences attending more than a gig a week (!) every year. Shanae is an ever present figure in the scene, and that naturally brings a wealth of insight. In this conversation, we dive into the hilarious story of Shanae’s entrance into the industry and her experiences working with artists, industry bodies and in pushing her own content. We also get her take on some of the biggest conversations in the Australian music scene right now + a bunch more. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. The New South Wales live music scene is officially stepping into a new era! After a turbulent decade marked by the 2014 lockout laws and severe COVID-19 restrictions, the NSW Government has passed the landmark Contemporary Music Act 2026. In this episode, we break down what this historic legislation means for local artists, venue owners, festival organisers, and music lovers across the state. We also have a quick debte about AI, and if given the choice, would we erase it? We then take a brief look ahead to this weekend's Gossy Weekender, highlighting the brilliant three-day community music festival held in Gosford on the NSW Central Coast. Like for a like, TBH, rate, etc etc. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. The news doesn't sleep, so we're coming to you with another Music News this week as copyright and AI return to the headlines. We first brought you revelations that copyright law could be changing to accomodate AI companies almost a year ago. Since that story first broke, it has felt like we've been playing an incredibly frustrating a game of whack-a-mole. Rumours would swirl, creatives would mobilise, Government would reassure. Rinse and repeat. We once again find ourselves at the beginning of this cycle. Though this time it's looking far more certain that change is coming for Australian copyright law. Behemoth AI multinationals like OpenAi and Anthropic have continued to pressure the federal government to make copyright law changes in their favour. A recent interview with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offered little reassurance that his government is resisting that pressure. In this episode, we break down the latest developments in this saga. You'll hear the timeline to now, the leaked federal government documents that have Aussie creatives mobilising again, and the PM's barely reassuring response to renewed concerns around copyright.

Well it's a helluva pod, this one! We talk firstly about the news that the ACCC has granted APRA a five-year extension, and why that might be a problem. We then go deep into the pill testing debate, sparked by news that NSW will see 15 festivals with pill testing from October. We talk about why it's good, and think about what could be different, has the government not felt the need for a (yet another) summit and inquiry. We then shift out attention to a world record attempt last weekend by Sydney band Fathom. They travelled from Singleton to Canberra, playing nine shows in 12 hours, and raised more than $2,000 for Beyond Blue during the process. We finish by updating a story from two years ago, which is related to the F1 Melbourne Grand Prix cancellation in 2020, why Robbie Williams is involved, and why we might have a bonus interview with [REDACTED] coming exclusively to our Patreons if we can find the audio.
