Matthew Farwell Was Never Tested Against WHAT?!

Leo Hengstler drove the ambulance that responded to the Brookfield Boarding Kennels on February 16, 1981. He testified to something that appears in no book, no movie, and no dramatization of this case. He heard Debbie Glatzel tell her father while Alan Bono lay dying: "You know how he gets when he's been drinking." Not possessed. Drinking. Debbie had counted five blackout episodes in the months after Arne challenged the demon. She said each one looked exactly like David's. The Washington Post described a different Arne Johnson — quick to anger, possessive, a man who ripped a stuffed animal apart with his knife. He'd carried that folding knife since he was a kid. On a holiday afternoon, Bono drank red wine for hours and grabbed a 9-year-old girl. Arne told him to let go. Bono was dead on his own lawn. Two of the biggest cases on the docket share a question about the police, and Eric Faddis joins me to work through both Sandra Birchmore and Alex Murdaugh. The FBI says a Stoughton police employee told Matthew Farwell about a friend's call reporting his relationship with Sandra, 12 days before she died. A dispatcher testified he carried that call to Farwell's office. Prosecutors say Farwell's DNA was on the strap found with her body. In South Carolina, Murdaugh's defense says prosecutors suggested a police officer who was his friend arrived at Moselle before other officers and could have helped hide the guns and clothes. The state cites grand jury secrecy and won't confirm anything. We also cover Chief Donna McNamara's lawsuit and the DNA under Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails. Every year the Assemblies of God sends licensed ministers a form asking whether they've upheld the moral code. Timmy Gibson says not one pastor he personally knew answered honestly. On Homicide Happy Hour, Gibson explained the system. If you told the truth, you lost your license and your livelihood. One friend admitted to marijuana and was removed from ministry immediately. Gibson says JP Miller's church was built on top of that structure. Miller set things up so no one could override him. Miller faces cyberstalking and false statements charges federally. He has pleaded not guilty. He is not charged in Mica Miller's death. Tony asked about Suzie Skinner, Miller's current wife, whose previous husband was paraplegic and died under circumstances both hosts called mysterious. Alex Murdaugh's lawyers asked for one thing the state didn't want to give them, and on October 16 Judge Debra McCaslin gave it to them anyway. Eric Faddis joins me to weigh the ruling. The defense gets its own testing on unknown male DNA from Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and her phone. Prosecutors warned the tests could exhaust the samples. Murdaugh's team says the state withheld evidence and wants to know whether that DNA belongs to someone else who was at Moselle. The same hearing ended Dick Harpootlian's polygraph talking point. The judge said Murdaugh failed a test about hiding financial records. The missing guns are the next fight. The defense wants to know if a grand jury is looking at a police officer friend of Murdaugh's, and prosecutors won't say. Eric explains why that matters for April. David Glatzel was 11 years old when he described visions of Arne Johnson killing someone. Months before anyone died. Before February 16, 1981, when Johnson stabbed Alan Bono on the lawn of a Brookfield, Connecticut boarding kennel — the first homicide in the town's 193-year history. His brother Carl was in the room the day it allegedly started. Carl saw nothing. Their parents divided — their mother believed, their father slapped David during an episode and he stopped immediately. Ed and Lorraine Warren arrived and told the family to start recording. Those cassette tapes survived more than 40 years. On them, an 11-year-old's voice is deep, guttural, screaming profanities at his mother. The Church sent priests but refused the formal exorcism. Then Arne Johnson challenged the entity to take him instead. David improved. Arne started blacking out.
