#21: Don’t Forget the Children: Betrayal Trauma’s Impact on the Family System

Rooted and Rising Healing After Betrayal

Show Notes

Betrayal trauma is often talked about as a couple’s crisis, but betrayal is never contained to the marriage alone. In this episode, Hali Roderick and her daughter Morgan Ellsworth explore the often-overlooked impact of parental betrayal on children and the entire family system. As both professionals in the betrayal trauma field, and as a mother and daughter who have lived this experience firsthand, they invite listeners into an essential conversation on generational healing, witnessing, and family recovery. They discuss how children often feel the impact of betrayal in the family, without the truth to give language to their experience. Without support, they often carry confusion, self-blame, distorted beliefs, and unprocessed grief into adulthood. Together, they discuss how children often sit in an unaware and disempowered place and why compassionate witnessing, emotional validation, and developmentally appropriate disclosure are essential for restoring agency and safety. Healing is messy. It is courageous. And it is possible across generations.

After betrayal, it's natural to want something - anything - that will make you feel safe again. Sometimes the boundaries we set carry a quiet hope that our partner will finally change, and without meaning to, a boundary can become a way of trying to control the outcome. In this episode, we talk about what healthy boundaries actually are in betrayal trauma recovery, how to tell the difference between a boundary and covert control, and why that difference matters so much for your peace. Whether you're staying, leaving, or still figuring it out, this conversation is about your healing.

Betrayal doesn't just break trust in one person. For a lot of women, it quietly rewrites how they see everyone — turning "this person hurt me" into "people aren't safe," or "this man betrayed me" into "men can't be trusted." In this episode, Hali talks directly to the parts of you that have gotten more guarded since betrayal. This episode covers that healing was never dependent on the relationship's outcome, that people (including the person who hurt you) can genuinely change through consistency and accountability — but that trust is earned back over time, not handed over because someone says they're changing. While you're doing the harder work of healing, start noticing the good that's still around you — the people who keep their word, apologize and actually change, show up consistently. Not to prove anything to yourself, just to notice it. Because betrayal doesn't get to decide who you become. You do.

When your partner starts doing things differently — even for a short stretch — it's natural to feel relief, and easy to let your guard down. But a few good weeks isn't the same thing as rebuilt trust, and relaxing your boundaries too early can open the door for old patterns to quietly return. In this episode, we talk about why trusting too soon happens, what it actually costs, and how to validate how hard it is to sit in the discomfort of waiting for trust to be earned over time — not just implied by a good moment.
