Most parents and teachers don't need to be convinced that connection matters. The harder question is: Why, when we care so deeply about kids, can there still be such a gap between how we want to show up and what happens in real life? In Season 1, Episode 1 of Thrive in Real Life, Joel and Chantal explore the connection gap—and what it actually looks like to start crossing the bridge.
They get real about the things that widen the gap: busyness, low capacity, stress, our own “shark music,” correction-heavy interactions, and even the ways our personalities and expectations can clash with the child in front of us.
You'll hear practical ideas for: recognizing what may be getting in the way of connection shifting from correction-heavy to connection-heavy interactions using DISC as one simple lens for understanding different connection pathways creating systems and routines that make connection easier at home and school repairing, reconnecting, and giving ourselves grace when we don't get it right
Because thriving isn't about becoming the perfect parent or teacher. It's learning to notice the gap, get curious about what's creating it, and keep taking brave steps across the bridge toward connection.

What does it actually mean to be grateful when life is challenging? We've all heard that we should count our blessings, focus on the positive, or appreciate what we have. But when you're exhausted, overwhelmed, frustrated, or struggling, gratitude can feel like just another thing you're supposed to be doing. In this episode of Thrive in Real Life, registered psychologists Joel and Chantal explore what gratitude really looks like in everyday life—and how it can help us see the good without ignoring what's hard. As Chantal puts it, “Gratitude isn't a correction of reality. It's an expansion of reality.” Together, they explore: Why gratitude can feel like pressure: How the expectation to be grateful can become another “should,” and how to move from guilt to genuine appreciation. Seeing the full picture: How to acknowledge life's challenges while making room for the good, without forcing positivity or minimizing difficult experiences. Practical ways to practice gratitude: Simple ways to notice ordinary moments, reflect on what matters, celebrate small wins, and bring gratitude into family life. Gratitude and relationships: How expressing specific appreciation can strengthen connection, and how learning to receive appreciation matters too. When gratitude isn't the answer: Why sometimes we need rest, a boundary, or a practical change—and how gratitude can help us see what we need next. Whether gratitude comes naturally to you or feels like something you have to work at, this conversation offers practical ways to make it part of real life—one small step at a time. It's a grace journey, not a guilt trip. Why can we know exactly how we want to show up—and still struggle to actually do it? Maybe you want to be a more patient parent, a more present partner, take better care of yourself, or handle stressful moments differently. You can see the person you want to be, but real life gets in the way. Stress, limited capacity, old patterns, discomfort, work, parenting, relationships—it can all create a gap between where we are and where we want to be.
