L.A. Noire: The Collected Stories (Part 2) – Hall and Joyce Carol Oates

The podcast delves into the literary contributions of renowned author Joyce Carol Oates, particularly her short story "Black Dahlia and White Rose," which fictionalizes the lives of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia. The hosts discuss how Oates weaves historical elements with her unique narrative style, presenting the characters' perspectives in a way that highlights the tragic circumstances surrounding their lives and deaths. The story is noted for its exploration of themes such as the impact of male figures in the lives of women and the societal expectations placed upon them.

In addition to Oates, the episode covers another story titled "School for Murder" by Francine Prose, which presents a darkly humorous take on the film industry through the lens of a struggling actor. The protagonist grapples with his traumatic past as a soldier, leading to a chilling climax where he inadvertently commits murder during a film shoot. The discussion emphasizes the straightforward yet impactful nature of the narrative, drawing parallels to classic noir themes and the portrayal of violence against women.

The hosts reflect on the significance of these stories within the context of the L.A. Noire video game, noting the unusual collaboration between Rockstar Games and established literary figures. They express admiration for the bold choice to include such serious literary works in a video game, highlighting the potential for deeper storytelling in interactive media. Overall, the episode showcases a blend of literary analysis and pop culture commentary, inviting listeners to consider the intersections of literature, history, and entertainment.
