Poetic License feat. Jasper Ceylon

The Getting Lit Podcast

Show Notes

Send us a text This week we're joined by the "Ern Malley of the 21st Century," Jasper Ceylon, who has pranked multiple poetry journals by posing as vogueish identities while submitting terrible poems. Jasper successfully published poems that were intentionally bad to woke journals more interested in an author's pronouns, sexuality and racial characteristics than talent. This satirical "performance art" piece has been documented in his new book, Echolalia Review. We discussed the quality control issues in the publishing industry, and the challenges faced by indie writers, the prevalence of dishonesty in the literary world, particularly in the representation of indigenous cultures, and the challenges of navigating the literary world. Fresta is joined by returning guest Ryan Simón (EIC of American Vulgaria and Ristuko) to discuss comedian Louis C.K.’s debut novel, Ingram, a picaresque of surprising literary quality. This episode, like the rambling narrative of Louis’ novel, covers many topics, from trans karaoke to Kmart and Southern Gothic. A great conversation! Felix McNamara joins us to discuss his epic poem, Atrocities, which is assembled from the discursive rubble of the 21st century to build something new. We talk about a lot of different topics orbiting and intersecting the poem, including Fukuyama’s End of History, liberal aesthetics or lack thereof, the limits of nostalgia, Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon and Norm McDonald as mythic figures. We also discuss some highlights from our recent reading night in Melbourne.
