The Mishal Husain Show

Show Notes

The US political climate is reaching fever pitch. The midterms are days away, following closely on elections in Brazil, Serbia and Israel, while in the UK, Andy Burnham's government has just unveiled its first budget. For MIT professor Daron Acemoglu, co-winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in economics, the stakes go beyond individual governments or countries to the state of democracy itself. In this conversation with Mishal Husain, Acemoglu talks about his latest book, ‘What Happened to Liberal Democracy: Remaking a Politics of Shared Prosperity’. In it he offers a prescription for the center-left of politics, the political tradition with which he is aligned, and which he argues needs a new focus in the age of AI and algorithmic social media. As US journalist Azadeh Moaveni was writing her latest book, ‘The East Wing’, a history of America's first ladies and their staff, President Donald Trump’s demolition of that very part of the White House was underway. Moaveni presents her book as a “parallel women’s history,” tracing how the wives of US presidents, who traditionally had offices in the now-vanished annex, helped shape alliances at home and abroad. Moaveni, a journalism professor at New York University, is a longtime reporter on Iran and the Middle East. She explains in her conversation with Mishal Husain how when she took on the project, Iran seemed unusually quiet. Then the US and Israel attacked. Here, she reflects on a seismic year in the US and around the world. Contact The Mishal Husain Show [email protected] Subscribe today on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
