Transformative Paths

Begin Again: Holding Hope When the World Breaks (Part 1)

Transformative Paths

Show Notes

In Part 1 of this deeply compassionate conversation, Wanda Jean Carroll sits down with suicide prevention educator and mental health advocate Bonnie Black to explore the realities of shame, silence, emotional pain, and the importance of human connection during life’s darkest moments. Together, they discuss suicide stigma, the fear many people have of saying the “wrong thing,” and why compassionate listening can become a powerful first step toward hope and healing. Bonnie shares insights from decades of suicide prevention work, including how emotional overwhelm affects the brain, the role of community and “third places,” and why people often need safe, nonjudgmental spaces to feel seen and heard. This episode is not about sensationalizing pain — it is about understanding it, reducing stigma, and reminding people that they are not alone. Why do some moments affect us far more deeply than they seem to deserve? A simple comment. A delayed text. A disagreement. A look across the room. Sometimes our reactions feel bigger than the moment itself. In this episode of Transformative Paths, Wanda J. Carroll explores how emotional pain from our past can quietly influence the choices we make today. Drawing on counseling psychology, emotional regulation, and trauma-informed concepts, she explains how our nervous system learns to protect us—and how those protective responses can sometimes lead to defensiveness, withdrawal, anger, or impulsive decisions. Together, we'll explore: - Why certain situations trigger powerful emotional reactions - How unresolved pain shapes our automatic responses -The concept of the Window of Tolerance and why it matters - How awareness creates space between emotion and action - Why understanding our pain is not about making excuses, but about making different choices This episode is an invitation to approach yourself with curiosity instead of judgment, recognizing that while pain may influence our reactions, it does not have to determine our future. Because transformation begins in the moment before. #TransformativePaths #TheMomentBefore #ImpulseAndChoice #MentalHealth #EmotionalIntelligence #PersonalGrowth #SelfAwareness #BehaviorChange #Leadership #ChangeIsAPractice

What happens when you're doing the work to change—but the other person isn't? In Part 2 of Wanda Carroll's conversation with Dr. Kasey Stewart, the discussion moves deeper into the realities of personal change: boundaries, old patterns, relationships, setbacks, and the difficult realization that we cannot make someone else change. Wanda and Kasey explore what happens when we fall back into behaviors we thought we'd left behind—and why slipping into an old pattern doesn't necessarily mean we haven't grown. Sometimes progress looks different than we expect: recognizing a reaction sooner, recovering more quickly, repairing differently, or finally setting a boundary. But what happens when we've communicated, tried, repaired, and hoped—and nothing changes? The conversation turns to one of the hardest parts of growth: recognizing what is ours to work on and what isn't ours to fix. Is there a difference between giving up and letting go? Can releasing an expectation, a relationship, resentment, or the need to be understood actually be part of moving forward? Sometimes change means staying and responding differently. Sometimes it means repairing. Sometimes it means setting a boundary. And sometimes it means accepting that it's okay to let go.
