Summary
A new leadless pacemaker technology is gaining attention for its innovative approach to heart health. This tiny device, measuring less than two centimeters, is designed to be implanted directly into the right ventricle of the heart through a catheter inserted from the groin. Unlike traditional pacemakers that require wires and an external battery, this leadless version operates without any wires and can last for several years, providing electrical stimulation to the heart as needed.
The procedure for inserting the leadless pacemaker is significantly different from that of traditional devices. The device is pushed through a hollow tube into the heart, where it attaches to the inner wall of the right ventricle using tiny prongs. Once deployed, the pacemaker cannot be retrieved, but if the battery runs out, a new device can be inserted without needing to remove the old one. This technology is particularly beneficial for patients who may have complications with traditional pacemaker insertion, such as those with prior infections or inaccessible veins.
Future advancements in pacemaker technology may allow for pacing in both the upper and lower chambers of the heart, expanding the potential applications of this innovative device. The leadless pacemaker represents a significant step forward in cardiac care, offering a less invasive option for patients in need of heart rhythm management.
