After Swim

Episode 2 - Resilience, Rottnest & Real Conversations

After Swim

Show Notes

This week didn’t exactly start to plan. A live power outage in the opening minutes forced us to reset in real time. Which, in many ways, became the perfect reflection of this episode’s theme: Resilience. From major global swims to the meaning behind Rottnest, this episode explores what it means to prepare well, and what it takes to respond when things don’t go to plan.

00:00 - Intro A slightly chaotic start thanks to a technical outage… but a reminder that open water (and live streaming) rarely goes exactly to plan.

01:52 - 🌊 This Week in the Water We took a lap around what’s happening across the open water world, including: • U24 Safety to Sorrento Swim in Port Phillip Bay. 24km, 12km and 6km events with an incredible finishing rate !

Recently on After Swim, we sat down with Simone Blaser, founder of Swim Wild Escape and the first person to swim the length of the Upper Ord River. What started as a love of adventure eventually led Simone to take on a 54 km swim through one of Western Australia's most remote and spectacular waterways. She started around 11pm, swam through the darkness, faced the heat, fatigue and plenty of moments of doubt, and eventually watched the sun rise over the river. But what makes Simone's story particularly interesting is that becoming the first person to complete the swim wasn't actually what motivated her. It was the challenge. The adventure. And the simple question: "Why not?" We talk about the moments when things got tough, how she broke the swim down into manageable pieces, the story behind Swim Wild Escape, and why she believes you don't have to be an elite athlete to challenge yourself and do something extraordinary. It's a great conversation about swimming, adventure, resilience and finding something you genuinely love.

We sat down live with Brendan Cullen, a farmer from the Australian outback who took on one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges: swimming the English Channel. In this unscripted After Swim conversation, Brendan shares the full journey behind his book The Desert Swimmer. From growing up in the bush, to battling mental health challenges, to finding purpose through open water swimming. We explore what led him to take that first step, how he trained hundreds of kilometres from the ocean, and what it really takes, physically and mentally, to cross the Channel. This is a raw and honest conversation about resilience, identity, community, and the power of saying yes to something that feels completely out of reach. If you’ve ever wondered what’s possible when you commit to change, this one’s for you.

This week’s conversation centred around something every swimmer experiences, but few people truly prepare for: what happens after the event is over. Because the reality is that finishing the swim is only part of the journey. What you do next matters just as much.

This week’s conversation covered a wide cross-section of the global open water swimming community, from high-altitude swims and remote expeditions to major Australian events and meaningful milestones.
