Me And My Tiny Human

Yelling doesn't make you a bad mum

Me And My Tiny Human

Show Notes

Ever feel like you’re going to turn inside out trying not to yell at your kid? Me too! This week’s listener question comes from Annalise, a solo mum trying her best not to lose it on the daily but also wondering if she’s the only one struggling to keep it under wraps in the no escape / no tap out reality of parenting alone. I talk about my experience of trying (and failing) to be a zero yelling mum and why the fantasy of stepping out of the room to scream into a pillow is completely unrealistic when you’re on your own and your kid is mid-meltdown. I also chat about bedtime stall tactics, boundary-holding exhaustion and the weird comfort of hearing your toddler parrot your worst moments back to you. Parenting’s fun, hey? Ever said to someone: “I’m solo parenting this weekend”? I get it. Going from two sets of hands to one is a serious shock to the system… but it’s also not quite the same thing. When you’re doing it on your own, there’s no handover coming. Ever. No backup if things go sideways. Ever. No one else there (even over the phone) taking responsibility for figuring things out with you. But weirdly, I think that can make things simpler. Not logistically, sure. But cleaner. More straightforward. Way less emotionally complicated. So this is a bit of a reality check… but also a bit of reassurance if you’ve ever said it yourself and immediately thought, “Oh shit, should I not have said that?” You’re fine. I promise. Everyone warns you about how brutal the sickness phase is. The daycare germs. The sleepless nights. The absolute chaos of trying to keep a tiny human alive while they’re falling apart. And yes… some of that is very real. But what nobody really prepares you for is the moment it changes. When your kid can actually tell you what’s wrong. When they understand what you’re asking. When you’re suddenly not guessing your way through it anymore. This was one of those moments and I genuinely could not believe what was happening. There are some parenting moments that happen in a split second… and then live in your nervous system forever. This episode is about one (or maybe a couple) of those. A trip to the park, a child hanging off a bridge with one hand and a memory from the baby days that still makes me feel physically ill when I think about it. Nothing terrible happened, but it so easily could have. And there's no guilt quite like the guilt of a near miss. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people, of the Eora Nation. There are some parts of parenting you know are coming one day. And then there are the ones that arrive way earlier than you expected and leave you sitting on Google wondering whether you need to panic. This was one of those for me. What followed was a bit of research, a lot of trying not to make it weird, and one of the greatest toddler phrases I’ve ever heard in my life. I didn’t give my kid any Easter eggs this year, which, apparently, is a thing people have opinions about. I'm definitely not running a sugar-free monastery over here. But after seeing what a few small Easter eggs did to my child… I feel pretty comfortable with my decision. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people, of the Eora Nation.
