Dead Man's Checkout: A Library Book Returned From Inside A Wall

A manila checkout card stamped November 14, 1971 named a borrower who had been dead since August 12, 1969 - and the book sat sealed inside a wall for thirty-two years. A 1958 Field Guide to North American Birds was recovered damp and swollen from a hidden cavity in the Bellard Public Library; one pencil circle on the ruby-throated hummingbird page matched Walter H. Freed's only mark. How did a book get checked out in a dead man's name and then vanish into a secret wall?

In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from the circulation desk records to the accidental discovery during a drainage repair, laying out the surviving documents, the people who handled the book, and the unanswered discrepancy about the 1971 checkout. What does the evidence - the checkout card, overdue notices, obituary clipping, and the sealed void behind the east wall - actually add up to?

Person: Walter H. Freed Date of death: August 12, 1969 Address: 14 Copley Drive, Bellard Book: A Field Guide to North American Birds (1958) Discovery event: Drainage repair by Mitchell Septic and Well Service, October 2003

- The checkout card inside the book shows a due date stamped November 14, 1971 in blue ballpoint. - Walter H. Freed registered for a library card in March 1963 and was a steady borrower through six years. - Three overdue notices for Freed's account survived in the library records and were presumably sent to 14 Copley Drive with no response. - The hidden cavity behind the library's east wall was roughly the size of a storage crate, sealed with plaster and lath and patched over invisibly. - The book was recovered during an October 2003 drainage repair by Sandra Mitchell's crew and brought to head librarian Patricia Holm, then handled by Amanda Snyder.
