The Town Erased Her Name - The Oak Still Whispers Dinah

A town that covered a name left a dress to sway on a three-inch stub of wood for 130 years; the dress smelled of cedar and fit a child sized six to eight. Who did Dellmore deliberately erase, and why would an old oak be the only witness left to whisper her name?

In this episode, we follow the discovery that reopened a sealed ledger entry and a local legend long kept out of records. Listen as an archivist, a marshal, and a local woman trace a blacked-out name in the coroner’s book to a white dress on the Witness Tree - and ask who the town tried to make disappear.

Person: Donna Padgett Date: August 14, 2019 Location: junction of quarry access road and county spur Case: coroner ledger entry dated August 22, 1889 with name obscured by layered ink Item: child's white dress with blue sash, size six to eight

- The dress hung from a dead three-inch wood stub left when the branch was sheared in spring 2017. - Marshal Dennis Hoyt filed an incident report after Pamela Burns found the dress at 5:51 AM. - Iris Padgett died in 1993 and left the dress, a tintype, and an unsigned letter in a cedar chest to her daughter Donna. - Halbert County had fewer than 900 residents in 2019 and the oak is locally called the Witness Tree. - The coroner’s 1889 entry lists a female, age approximately 45, cause of death exposure and injury, with the name covered by a deliberate black rectangle.
