Summary
Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter has led to significant upheaval within the company, marked by mass layoffs and a dramatic restructuring aimed at reversing years of financial losses. After taking control, Musk dismissed nearly half of Twitter's workforce and dissolved the board of directors, citing the need to cut costs and streamline operations. His management style has been described as intense, with an ultimatum issued to remaining employees to either work long hours or resign with a generous severance package. This approach has raised concerns about the platform's stability and operational capacity.
The financial strain on Twitter is evident, as the company has struggled to achieve profitability, recording only two profitable years in the past decade. Musk's takeover has compounded these issues, with a $13 billion loan taken to finance the acquisition, leading to projected annual interest payments of around $1 billion. Advertisers have reacted cautiously, with many suspending their campaigns due to fears of brand safety amid the chaos. Musk has attempted to diversify revenue streams, including a controversial subscription model for verification, which faced backlash after leading to widespread impersonation on the platform.
As Musk navigates these challenges, he has also revealed internal communications that suggest close ties between Twitter and government agencies, raising questions about censorship and surveillance. The ongoing turmoil has led to a decline in Twitter's value, with projections indicating a potential drop of 50-70%. Despite the uncertainty, there are discussions about transforming Twitter into a multifunctional app akin to WeChat, which could enhance its financial viability if successful. The future of Twitter remains uncertain, with Musk's leadership style and decisions likely to shape its trajectory in the coming months.
