The Fly-In

Show Notes

This special edition episode includes the final segment of this week’s Fly-In: Live event, which was streamed on Wednesday, October 28th. During this segment, co-hosts Greg Landsman (OH-01) and Marc Veasey (TX-33) were joined by New Dem Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) and Stephanie Bradford, a Lancaster County, PA resident living with Type 1 diabetes. Stephanie joined the podcast while visiting D.C. with Protect Our Care, an organization dedicated to educating the public and influencing healthcare policy, often by amplifying the voices of healthcare storytellers like Stephanie. “Stephanie’s story reminds us what Democrats in Congress are fighting for,” said Protect Our Care Senior Advisor Anne Shoup. “By ripping away tax credits that make health insurance affordable for millions of Americans, the GOP is forcing hard-working people to empty their savings just to stay alive. Donald Trump and Republicans had no qualms about carving out massive tax breaks for billionaires. It’s high time they gave some relief to everyday people like Stephanie.” Stephanie, a freelance writer, discusses the challenges of living with Type 1 diabetes while purchasing healthcare through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. She details how her already high monthly premiums are expected to double next year if Congressional Republicans refuse to extend the ACA tax credits. The hosts and guests also talk through the affordability and access issues with the American healthcare system at large, and the work Congress must do to make healthcare available to every American. You can view the full live episode here, which included several New Dem Members as guests, including Reps. Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Deborah Ross (NC-02), Susie Lee (NV-03), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Sean Casten (IL-06).

In this episode, Reps. Greg Landsman (OH-01) and Marc Veasey (TX-33) are joined by Congresswoman Kim Schrier (WA-08), the first pediatrician in Congress and chair of the New Dem Rural Revitalization Working Group. As a doctor, Rep. Schrier has seen firsthand what happens when people don’t have access to healthcare. The members discuss how Congressional Republican cuts to Medicare and Medicaid will not only hurt those who are losing their coverage, but will put a strain on the entire healthcare system. Rep. Schrier also explains how rural communities are especially vulnerable to these cuts, as it has already led to several rural hospital closures. They also discuss the dangerous rhetoric that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pushed for years about vaccine safety, something Rep. Schrier dealt with as a pediatrician and continues to push back against. Finally, they react to a recent campaign ad that Trump aired on television using taxpayer dollars.

This week, co-hosts Reps. Greg Landsman (OH-01) and Marc Veasey (TX-33) were joined by Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) to talk about the cost of living crisis facing American families, from groceries to gas and school supplies. They discuss the urgent need to build more housing to lower costs, and how the recently passed bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act was a step in the right direction. Then, Rep. Pettersen updates viewers on her effort to allow new parents in Congress to vote by proxy, which she discussed on The Fly-In last year after Speaker Johnson shut down the House to block a vote on her bill. The Members discuss why it’s so important for Congress to support families and make it easier for young people to represent their communities. Additionally, they respond to Trump’s announcement last week at the Republican Midterm Convention that every American adult will receive a $5,000 “dividend” if Republicans keep their majority—an action that would cost over $1.3 trillion.

Co-Hosts Greg Landsman (OH-01) and Marc Veasey (TX-33) were back in Washington this week, joined by Congressman Don Beyer (VA-08), to talk through the latest news on Trump’s Trade War with Canada and developments in Artificial Intelligence. Beyer, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and Chair of the New Dem Trade Task Force, shares how this latest round of tariffs on Canadian imports are raising prices on American consumers and why this Administration’s approach to trade policy is dangerous and expensive. Rep. Beyer is also one of the leading experts in Congress on AI, after recently returning to school to get his Master’s in machine learning. The members discuss the many ways in which AI has impacted Americans’ daily lives, and what Congress needs to do to prevent this new technology from getting out of control while still promoting American innovation. Additionally, Rep. Beyer shares stories from another one of his major endeavors: completing the entire Appalachian Trail.

In this episode, co-hosts Reps. Greg Landsman (OH-01) and Marc Veasey (TX-33) are joined by West Virginia State Delegate Kayla Young, a rising star and NewDEAL Leader representing Charleston, WV and serving as Minority Leader Pro Tempore in the House of Delegates. Kayla is a native of her district and is one of only nine Democrats serving in the House of Delegates, along with 91 Republicans. She shares what West Virginians have been saying about rising costs, particularly how skyrocketing utility bills and childcare costs have been crushing working families across the state, and talks about how she gets things done in a Republican supermajority. The group also discusses how Republican healthcare cuts have hurt West Virginians, since 30 percent of the state relies on Medicaid. Young, who has made waves on social media with her brand of straightforward content, shares how she uses her platform to communicate with folks across the state and provide updates on issues they care about. Finally, Young answers some of Landsman and Veasey’s burning questions about West Virginia, such as “What is a pepperoni roll?” “Where is ‘the holler?’” and “Is Mothman real?”
