Crisis-Hit Liverpool | Ashes Latest | Are Chelsea Contenders?

Sunday Supplement

Show Notes

Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Mark Ogden, Jason Burt and debutant Charlie Eccleshare to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action.

We begin with crisis-hit Liverpool. Their defeat to Forest at Anfield marked a sixth loss in seven matches, but is it too harsh for Mark to suggest that Arne Slot’s side is on track to become the worst defending champions in Premier League history?

Attention then shifts to the Ashes, where we’re joined by Martin Samuel, reporting on an extraordinary opening two days in Perth. Following a chaotic and crushing defeat for England in the first Test — driven by a blistering century from Travis Head — Martin raises serious questions about England’s preparation and their batting order.

We then turn to Manchester City, who suffered a 2–1 defeat at Newcastle, undone by a Harvey Barnes double. With a fourth league loss already this season, is Pep Guardiola’s side showing signs of vulnerability? And to what extent has Rodri’s absence contributed to their struggles?

Next, we turn to F1 news, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where both McLaren cars were disqualified, costing Lando Norris his second-place finish and the 18 points that came with it. With only two events remaining, how will this reshape the picture?

We then turn to Chelsea, who moved into second place with a 2–0 win at Burnley’s Turf Moor. Mark is surprised to see them so high in the table — but is he right to argue that they still don’t look like genuine title contenders?

Finally, Adam Collins returns — in good spirits — to analyse England’s predictability in the Ashes first Test and their total collapse in the second innings. Will the challenge only intensify in ten days’ time as we head to Brisbane for a pink-ball Test?

Hannah Wilkes is joined by Martin Samuel, Jacqui Oatley and John Cross to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We start with Manchester City’s 3–2 victory over Ipswich. With seven consecutive Premier League wins to kick off the season — just how impressive has this start been, and how dominant have City looked so far? Next to Chelsea, who secured a 2–0 win over Everton and kept their first clean sheet in nine months. Is this a turning point for Xabi Alonso’s side? We also look at Liverpool’s 2–1 win over Brentford, as goals from Muñoz and Isak overturned a half-time deficit to secure victory against Keith Andrews’ nine-men. And finally, another home defeat for Newcastle, who were booed off at both half-time and full-time. Matthias Jaissle described it as a much-needed reality check. We’re joined by Craig Hope, who saw this coming, but questions why Dan Burn was Newcastle’s best option up front in the closing stages. - •You can watch the sporting action live on Sky Sports. Hannah Wilkes is joined by James Olley, Jack Pitt-Brooke and Riath Al-Samarrai to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We look ahead to Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City, as City prepare for their first match since being found responsible for breaches of Premier League financial rules between 2009–10 and 2017–18. The club has lodged an appeal against the findings. We then turn to Manchester United and Tottenham, assessing the current situation at both clubs after Solanke struck a stoppage-time equaliser to earn ten-man Spurs a point at Old Trafford. Our attention then turns to Chelsea, following their emphatic 5-1 win over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge. Did Henderson’s brace prove he offers more than just experience to the side?

We begin discussing Manchester City, after reports claimed that the majority of the 115 charges against the club - for breaking Financial Fair Play rules - were found to have been proven. Man City deny all wrongdoing. We then move to England’s 3-2 defeat to world champions Spain. Jack describes it as an entertaining game, highlighting Marc Guehi’s error while also praising the strong spells of play from Thomas Tuchel’s side. Our attention then turns to Ireland, who are set to face Israel in the Nations League. Miguel discusses whether it is hypocritical for Ireland to play Israel given that they have previously played against Qatar and Afghanistan.

Hannah Wilkes is joined by Dominic King, Martin Samuel and John Cross to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We kick off with Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton, breaking down how Fabian Hürzeler’s side dominated the game through an impressive out-of-possession structure and aggressive man-to-man press, culminating in a 3-0 victory with 40% possession. We then turn to Tottenham, who scored their first two Premier League goals but lost 3-2 to Aston Villa, leaving them in the bottom three. Despite some encouraging football, Roberto De Zerbi admitted he was “disappointed, sad and frustrated” and revealed he didn’t speak to his players after the game. But is De Zerbi’s reputation beginning to come under scrutiny? Finally, we turn to another divisive VAR decision as Everton’s Barry saw a header ruled out while leading Ipswich 1-0. Despite no complaints from the Ipswich players, VAR judged Brennan Johnson to have been interfering with play. Dominic King and John Cross disagree over whether the goal should have stood — but was VAR right to intervene? - •You can watch the sporting action live on Sky Sports.
