#247 Filipe Toledo — Mental Health, Family, Faith & Winning Two WSL World Titles
Good Humans with Cooper ChapmanShow Notes
Two-time WSL World Champion Filipe Toledo joins me for one of the most powerful and personal conversations I've had on the show. Filipe opens up about the mental health battle behind his decision to step away from the tour in 2024, the weight of winning back-to-back world titles, his deep faith in God, family, the Olympics, and so much more.
Filipe shares the story of his darkest period back in 2020 — the moment he sought professional help and started therapy — and how that decision laid the foundation for the comeback that saw him win two world titles in 2022 and 2023. This is Filipe like you've never heard him before: raw, honest, and reflective on what it really takes to ask for help, walk away when you're at the top, and find your way back.
In this episode we cover: Growing up in Ubatuba and the move to San Clemente His darkest moments in 2020 and the decision to seek professional help The pressure of chasing (and winning) world titles Why he stepped away from the CT in 2024 The role of faith in God through his highest and lowest moments Family, fatherhood, and staying grounded Finding joy in surfing again Lessons from his father and lifelong coach, Ricardo What legacy means to him now
A must-listen for anyone who's ever felt the weight of expectation, struggled in silence, or wondered what's on the other side of asking for help.

I loved this one. Alexis has spent over a decade inside marketing, media and PR, so she knows exactly how our attention gets engineered. And she’s honest enough to call herself a tech addict too. Her new book Real: Reconnecting to Yourself in a World of Likes and Lies is three years in the making, and it’s all about how social media messes with who we think we are, and how to take that back. If you’ve ever closed an app feeling worse about yourself, this one’s for you.
This was a fascinating chat. Dr Joy Kong started out as a psychiatrist and addiction doctor before becoming one of the leading voices in stem cell therapy. She’s UCLA-trained, triple board-certified, and the founder of Chara Health in Los Angeles and the American Academy of Integrative Cell Therapy, where she trains doctors around the world. Joy cuts through the hype and tells it straight about what stem cells can and can’t do, and why she thinks we might be the first generation to reverse ageing. If you’re curious about longevity and where medicine is heading, you’ll love this one.
This week I sat down with Chris Mater, and this one is a masterclass in building a career by backing yourself at every turn.
