Encore: Tokio Hotel

Rehearsal Space Magdeburg: Memory Lane

Encore: Tokio Hotel

Show Notes

Smoking, fooling around in a moldy red and orange rehearsal room, peeing into a bottle to avoid the dangerous band in the hallway, declaring döner kebab the main meal of the day and shoplifting at the hardware store – so, what do you remember from your childhood? 'Memory Lane’ is Tokio Hotel's look back at the past, and a look back at Magdeburg. The place where, after intense interviews, the twins first brought young Gustav and then rock-throwing Georg into the band. The place where Bravo and co. shot the photos that made the young musicians' faces famous all over Germany. And the place all four of them fled the first chance they got. You'd think time heals all wounds, right? – Dear Aliens, welcome back to ‚Encore: Tokio Hotel‘!

The airport. Feeling like it's in the middle of nowhere, everything comes together in this non-place: love, stress, creativity, melancholy, sadness, and of course, a whole lot of drinks. The latter has definitely helped the band throw a party or two in a legal gray area. Complete with a subsequent blacklisting, of course. But hey, it’s always time for an after-work cocktail somewhere in the world. Ultimately though, Terminal 1 is all about one thing: The boys. Because nothing symbolizes the intense back-and-forth of Arrival and Departure quite like the numerous suitors Bill has welcomed here, only to send them packing with a one-way ticket. Okay, we don't want to exaggerate, but when it comes to the songwriting, we can already tell you this: This song is about at least two lovers. And no! Bushido doesn't count. Buckle up, Aliens. This episode is going to be a bumpy ride! Our new album 'ENCORE' is finally out! Homesick! For the band, it’s a feeling that holds two things at once: missing your own home while, without quite realizing it, you’re already settling into a new one. Once, home was the rehearsal rooms in Magdeburg, the small clubs where the first concerts took place, and the place where the twins successfully bought their way to a diploma, then rewarded themselves with their first expensive watches. Today it’s the big stage, where it snows, storms, or rains burning confetti, and where Bill wants to ascend into the sky at the end of the show like DJ Bobo. But one thing is certain: the band has already outgrown some of its early songs, and Tom, at least, has long been sick of living out of a suitcase. Which means that at some point, it’ll probably be over. Is “ENCORE” telling us this might be the last big tour, or will the band just keep playing until one of them drops? With that in mind: Dear Aliens! Welcome back to 'Encore: Tokio Hotel'! Our new album 'ENCORE' drops this friday, October 16!: https://tokiohotel.lnk.to/encore You can find all further info & updates about the podcast here: https://www.instagram.com/tokiohotel.zugabe/

After 25 years of band history, it's finally clear who the biggest security leak in the band is. But sure, quickly sending the latest demo to your current lovers and pretending the song is all about them is obviously a tempting move. But let's be honest: if Tom didn't handle criticism so badly, he'd show his wife the latest creations too, just like Georg and Gustav do. Speaking of criticism! "Without You" is probably the most controversial song on the record: longing for a partner vs. empowerment for the single lifestyle! Quiet ballad or stadium anthem, which Georg can blast in the car? Too many poppy synths and autotune, or exactly the sound that makes the album complete? The inner circle of the Tokio Hotel family is divided! But in the end, all that really counts is your verdict! They snagged the Moonman, beat Miley Cyrus for Best New Artist and took a dip with Bruno Mars in Hugh Hefner's grotto of pleasure. But none of that, not even Jimmy Iovine's crib, could convince Tokio Hotel to stay in the US. Was that the worst career move they ever made? After all, Bill & Tom ended up fleeing to L.A. later anyway. For the band, the song "California Nights" probably stands for mixed feelings: sushi with Jay-Z, drama with Katy Perry, T-Pain's elephants, the craving for excitement and the heartache of the Gs. Dear Aliens, get ready for another episode of Magdeburg Shore… uh, wait! Encore: Tokio Hotel, of course!

More aftersho back in the day! But on the bright side, Tokio Hotel are finally independent these days: they no longer share their bank accounts with random record label bosses, and they're even allowed to go shopping on their own. What Bill's autotuned vocals are about in the new song "Changes", and what the young, naive faces on their very first Bravo double-page spread underline, is a promise: life is written by change! And even though Georg has become a successful businessman, Gustav simply can't find the time to look after his 5 hectares of land, and Bill & Tom miss their youthful bodies amid all the partying, the four of them haven't forgotten how it all began. Who dares to take a look behind the scenes with us and find out who has changed the most? Dear Aliens, welcome to Encore:Tokio Hotel!
