The Cosmic Express - Jack Williamson

In a futuristic setting, Eric Stokes Harding, a novelist, and his wife Nada express their dissatisfaction with the artificiality of their civilization in the year 2432. They yearn for a simpler, more natural life, reminiscent of the past. Their conversation leads them to consider traveling to Venus, a planet believed to retain primitive life forms, as a means to escape their technologically dominated existence.

The couple learns about a new transportation method called the Cosmic Express, which allows for instantaneous travel by converting matter into energy. They manage to persuade an operator to send them to Venus, despite the risks involved. Upon arrival, they find themselves in a dense, muddy jungle, struggling to adapt to their new environment. As they attempt to build a shelter and find food, they confront the harsh realities of survival, including the threat of predatory creatures.

Ultimately, their adventure takes a turn when they are accidentally returned to their original location due to a mishap with the Cosmic Express. Back in their apartment, they reflect on their experience and the allure of their previous life. Eric channels their journey into a new novel, which becomes a bestseller, highlighting the contrast between the romanticized past and the complexities of modern civilization.
