Professor Dave Explains

Oxidation and Reduction

Professor Dave Explains

Summary

Professor Dave explains the concepts of organic oxidation and reduction, emphasizing the significance of oxygen content in these reactions. He clarifies that oxidation involves carbon gaining bonds to oxygen, while reduction involves carbon losing bonds to oxygen. Various functional groups, including carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and alcohols, are examined to illustrate these transformations.

The discussion highlights different oxidizing agents and their strengths. For instance, primary alcohols can be oxidized to aldehydes using pyridinium chlorochromate, while stronger agents like potassium permanganate can convert them to carboxylic acids. Secondary alcohols can only be oxidized to ketones, regardless of the oxidizing agent used.

On the reduction side, Professor Dave introduces reducing agents such as sodium borohydride and lithium aluminum hydride. Sodium borohydride can reduce aldehydes to alcohols but cannot affect carboxylic acids, whereas lithium aluminum hydride can reduce both aldehydes and carboxylic acids to primary alcohols. The differences in their effectiveness are attributed to the size and electronegativity of the ions involved, which influence their interactions with carbonyl compounds.

This is different from the redox we knew from general chemistry. It's not so much about highlighting electron transfer as it is about the number of bonds to oxygen that an atom possesses. An oxidation increases a carbon's bonds to oxygen, a reduction reduces a carbon's bonds to oxygen. Makes sense, no? Let's look at some common oxidizing and reducing agents while we're at it.Watch the whole Organic Chemistry playlist: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveOrgChemGeneral Chemistry Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveGenChemBiochemistry Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveBiochemBiology Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveBioClassical Physics Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDavePhysics1Modern Physics Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDavePhysics2Mathematics Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveMathEMAIL► [email protected]► http://patreon.com/ProfessorDaveExplainsCheck out "Is This Wi-Fi Organic?", my book on disarming pseudoscience!Amazon: https://amzn.to/2HtNpVHBookshop: https://bit.ly/39cKADMBarnes and Noble: https://bit.ly/3pUjmrn Book Depository: http://bit.ly/3aOVDlT Learn more about your ad choices. Didn't we already learn E2? Not so fast, when we are looking at E2 on cyclohexane it's a slightly different kettle of fish. Up until this point we have been learning everything in the active voice. This would be something llike: "The dog chewed the bone". But there is also the passive voice, which would turn that sentence into "The bone was chewed by the dog." This is used quite a bit in Latin for various reasons, so we need to know how to use it!Script by Patrizia Farina, Professor of Italian at Western Connecticut State University and Purchase College.Watch the whole Latin playlist: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveLatinItalian Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveItalianAmerican History Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveAmericanHistoryPhilosophy Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDavePhiloClassical Physics Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDavePhysics1Modern Physics Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDavePhysics2General Chemistry Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveGenChemOrganic Chemistry Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveOrgChemBiochemistry Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveBiochemBiology Tutorials: http://bit.ly/ProfDaveBioEMAIL► [email protected]► http://patreon.com/ProfessorDaveExplainsCheck out "Is This Wi-Fi Organic?", my book on disarming pseudoscience!Amazon: https://amzn.to/2HtNpVHBookshop: https://bit.ly/39cKADMBarnes and Noble: https://bit.ly/3pUjmrn Book Depository: http://bit.ly/3aOVDlT Learn more about your ad choices. I did two interviews for my Fauci video, but since the video ended up being extremely long, I decided to upload this interview with Johns Hopkins immunologist Gigi Gronvall separately, along with a quick summary and update regarding key aspects of the Fauci video.
