Charles Floyd: America's Robin Hood, or Savage Criminal?
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd, a notorious figure in American crime history, emerges as a complex character often viewed through the lens of folklore. Born into a modest farming family in Oklahoma, Floyd's early life was marked by a fascination with outlaws and a disdain for hard work. His criminal career began with petty thefts and escalated into bank robberies, leading him to become a public enemy after the death of John Dillinger.
Floyd's reputation as a "Robin Hood" figure is rooted in claims that he helped struggling farmers during the Great Depression by allegedly destroying mortgage documents during bank heists. However, evidence supporting these acts of benevolence remains largely anecdotal, with many attributing his generosity to self-preservation rather than altruism. As his criminal exploits increased, so did his notoriety, culminating in a series of violent confrontations with law enforcement.
The climax of Floyd's criminal saga occurs during the infamous Kansas City Massacre, where he and his accomplices killed several law enforcement officers in a failed attempt to free an imprisoned associate. This event solidified his status as one of the most wanted men in America. Ultimately, Floyd's life of crime ends in a shootout with police in Ohio, where he succumbs to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy that straddles the line between infamy and folk heroism.

---
“If you'll gather round me, children,
A story I will tell
'Bout Pretty Boy Floyd, an outlaw,
Oklahoma knew him well.
…
Yes, he took to the trees and timber
To live a life of shame;
Every crime in Oklahoma
Was added to his name.
But many a starvin' farmer
The same old story told
How the outlaw paid their mortgage
And saved their little homes.
Others tell you 'bout a stranger
That come to beg a meal,
Underneath his napkin
Left a thousand-dollar bill.”
Those words come from “The Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd,” a song by American folk icon Woody Guthrie. And it perfectly encapsulates the complex and controversial legacy left behind by one of America’s most notorious outlaws. Pretty Boy Floyd was a robber and a killer, no doubt about that. He became the country’s new “Public Enemy #1” after the death of John Dillinger.
And yet, many people remember him as the so-called “Robin Hood of the Cookson Hills” for his generosity towards the needy and, most famously, for allegedly burning mortgage documents whenever he robbed a bank to get people out of debt. But was this reputation deserved or did Floyd simply benefit from good post-mortem PR?
