Remembering Tom Stoppard: Bringing The Invention of Love to Broadway
Charlie Rose: In-Depth Interviews of Americas BestSummary
Playwright Tom Stoppard discusses his latest work, "The Invention of Love," which explores the life of poet A.E. Housman and his unrequited love for fellow student Moses Jackson at Oxford. Stoppard reveals that the seeds for the play emerged from his fascination with Housman's dual identity as both a romantic poet and a classical scholar, highlighting the interplay between love and the pursuit of knowledge.
As Stoppard delves into the creative process, he reflects on how his writing has evolved over the years, noting that he no longer approaches playwriting with a strict map or plan. He emphasizes the importance of discovery in his work, stating that he often does not know what he is searching for until he finds it. The inclusion of Oscar Wilde as a character in the play adds depth, as Stoppard reveals that Wilde's presence became a crucial element in shaping the narrative.
Stoppard also touches on the nature of audience engagement, expressing a desire to captivate both casual theatergoers and those seeking a deeper understanding of the material. He acknowledges the complexity of writing about themes of love and death, suggesting that the interplay between personal experience and the subject matter is what ultimately drives the creation of compelling theater.

Freston has spent his time since then advising a series of friends and clients including Oprah and Bono. His well-traveled life story is told in a new memoir, “Unplugged: Adventures from MTV to Timbuktu.”It is an interesting moment to look at these foundation blocks as we witness media and technology in transition. We will talk of many things including the ideas and people who were part of the Freston journey traveling the world. We will examine the philosophy that made many friends, and we will hear observations on the new world of streaming, podcasting and artificial intelligence as they change media, entertainment, sports, business, medicine, science and politics.
