Are You The Pusher Or The Driver?

Brown Girl Self-Care

Show Notes

I'm back behind the mic and dropping some real talk about what happens when life forces you to wake up from autopilot. This week, I’m sharing the raw reality of working a labor-intensive retail job at 50, dealing with the daily grind of pushing carts, and how a repetitive question from an older gentleman in the store literally stopped me dead in my tracks and forced me to look at how I'm navigating my life. Spoiler alert: You have permission to take control of your own damn life. True, decolonized self-care isn't about performing wellness or waiting until your circumstances are perfect to claim your space. It’s about standing squarely in a hard season, looking at your life, and choosing your power anyway. Lean in as we untangle what it means to stop living on autopilot and step into the driver's seat of your own liberation. What We’re Unpacking In This Episode: The Retail Reality Check: The logistics of being back in the retail trenches in decade number five, the physical toll of pushing carts, and navigating a season that feels heavy and labor-intensive. The Pusher vs. The Driver: The exact moment a daily question from a retail customer bypassed my ears and hit my understanding, sparking a deep revelation about survival mode vs. conscious sovereignty. The Anatomy of Autopilot: Breaking down how trauma, people-pleasing, and public validation trick us into letting life just "happen" to us, instead of mapping out our own master blueprint. The Power of Stillness: Why reclaiming your life requires getting quiet, turning off the noise and distractions, and allowing what’s beneath the surface to bubble up so you can figure out what you actually want. Getting Sick of Your Own Sh*t: A real-talk reality check on how we get comfortable in our excuses, make them our identity, and why hitting a wall with your own patterns is often the exact catalyst needed for true healing. The Reclaiming of Your Power: Why you have a right to hold the map, choose your destination, change your mind, and fully embrace every single gift and talent inside of you before you leave this earth.

This epside is for the eldest daughter who had to put her life and joy on hold to carry the weight of adult responsibilities on her shoulders. Ok, so I stand corrected. The writings shared weren't about "sensuality" per se, but Erotic as Power. I still suggest you read it when you have time to linger this month. I have a confession to make. A few days ago, my old survival brain started panicking about business metrics, and I frantically sat down to plan a massive, exhausting 90-day challenge. My plan was to force myself to show up on camera at 5:00 AM every single morning until the end of the year to feed the algorithm. That wasn't how I looked at it initially, but that's what it was. Let's talk about the trap of the "unintentional scramble"—how fear tries to trick us into running back to the hustle when we make space to be still/slow down/do less, and why the most radical thing a Black woman in her midlife can do right now is refuse to be a mule for the system. Put your phone on do-not-disturb, grab your tea, and let's talk about how we are going to unlabor and choose peace for the rest of this year. I'm writing more about rebuilding my life in my mid-life. Join me on Substack Putting on my auntie/much older sister hat on for this episode. Got a listener question recently from a young mother. She is working, about to go to school, and raising a young daugher on her own. On top of that the father of her child is "not the nicest." In her question she asks if things will ever get easier. You may be solo parenting, balancing an impossible load, or in the middle of a season where your energy is drained. This conversation is your reminder to remember your value and to also release the guilt you may be experiencing for decisions you made that didn't go as expected. Let's talk about protecting your peace around unhelpful co-parents, and practice practical "micro-self-care" when you have zero free time,
