In September of 2012, nineteen year old Faith Hedgepeth was brutally murdered in her Chapel Hill apartment by an unknown individual. A thorough examination of the scene and evidence told a disturbing story of the young woman’s last hours and her death at the hands of a brutally violent and vicious killer who struck out against the young woman with an overwhelming ferocity that left her battered, bruised and deceased. Despite an exhaustive investigation, law enforcement struggled to develop a solid suspect. The case wound on for nearly a decade until an arrest was made.
Nine years after the murder, a man arrested for a DUI had his DNA taken and submitted into law enforcement systems. It kicked back a shocking result connecting his DNA to the murder scene. Miguel Salguero-Olivares, twenty-eight at the time of his arrest and nineteen at the time of the murder, was officially charged with Faith’s murder back in September of 2021. Over the course of the next five years, the case seemed stagnant and debate began to rage about whether or not the trial would ever move forward. Well, it’s finally happened and just last month jury selection began.
The trial concluded on Friday, October 23rd, 2026, with a jury finding Olivares guilty of Faith’s murder and several other charges.
