In this video, Jon Moffitt addresses the relationship between law, gospel, good works, and assurance of salvation from a Reformed Baptist perspective. Should Christians look to their obedience for assurance? Do good works establish our assurance, or do they strengthen an assurance already founded upon Christ? Looking at the London Baptist Confession, especially chapters 5, 16, 17, and 18, Jon argues that the foundation of Christian assurance is the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ. Good works are real and necessary fruits of faith, and they can strengthen our assurance, but they are not its foundation. This distinction matters for how we preach to Christians struggling with sin. The law tells us how we ought to live, but the power for salvation, sanctification, perseverance, and obedience comes through Christ and the work of his Spirit. In this episode: • What law and gospel distinction actually means• Why law/gospel is part of the Reformed Baptist tradition• The foundation of assurance according to the 1689• How good works strengthen assurance• Why obedience is a fruit of assurance• What happens to assurance when Christians fall into serious sin• How Christ preserves his people to the end• Why preaching the gospel is essential for sanctification The Christian life does not move beyond Christ. We begin by faith in Christ, continue by faith in Christ, and are preserved through faith in Christ. Learn more and get our books at theocast.org.

Is antinomianism really the greatest threat to the church, or has another distortion of the gospel become far more common? Jon Moffitt examines antinomianism and neonomianism, defining both terms and explaining how they distort grace in different ways. Through Scripture and church history, Jon explores why gospel-centered preaching is often wrongly accused of being antinomian. Neither error can be corrected simply by adding more law, because both ultimately involve a corrupted understanding of the gospel. Drawing from Jude, Paul, and Peter, the solution is a proper understanding of grace that preserves the gospel rather than perverting it. Should preaching leave Christians encouraged by Christ, or exhausted from being beaten down? Jon Moffitt examines a powerful clip from Sinclair Ferguson on what faithful preaching should actually sound like. Ferguson’s wisdom challenges preaching that constantly scolds, condemns, or leaves congregations feeling spiritually defeated. For church members, this offers a helpful standard for recognizing Christ-centered preaching. For pastors, it raises an important question about whether the pulpit is feeding Christ’s sheep or simply whipping them. Can salvation really depend on your performance, obedience, or religious works? Jon Moffitt sits down with Ryan Hemelaar from NeedGod.net to examine the gospel of grace and the growing appeal of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. They discuss justification by faith alone, assurance of salvation, and why adding human works to Christ's finished work undermines the believer's rest. The conversation also explores why true obedience flows from gratitude and love for Christ, rather than fear of losing salvation. Ultimately, the focus returns to the sufficiency of Christ and the rest found in his righteousness alone. Should Christians use the law to make believers question their salvation? Jon Moffitt and Doug Van Dorn examine how the law functions before and after someone comes to Christ, and why Scripture's use of the law should not leave believers trapped in far. The conversation explores assurance, salvation, and the danger of using the law in ways that undermine confidence in Christ. They also address the question of whether Christians should continually doubt their salvation and how gospel clarity brings freedom and assurance. Must you repent of your sins before you can be saved? Jon Moffitt examines the biblical command to “repent and believe” and asks what repentance actually means in relation to salvation. The conversation explores the long-standing debate over whether turning away from sin must come before turning to Christ. Scripture is examined to clarify what true repentance is and whether anyone can truly repent of their sins apart from Christ. The discussion points to a deeper understanding of salvation, repentance, and faith.
