Episode 18 - What Even is Hardcore? (Hint: It's More Than You Think)

Dads Who Mosh

Show Notes

Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! Nate runs solo this week and starts be re-capping the Drain show with No Pressure, Haywire and Secret World. As the Great Mosh Debate continues, a few things are becoming clear: people in the hardcore community have strong opinions about moshing (to put it lightly), and at this point, "hardcore" music covers a wide spectrum: from deathcore, to beatdown, to hardcore punk, to what Nate is now calling "pop-core". Lots of folks think that they have the market cornered on what is actually "hardcore", but just like the people in the scene, heavy bands are all different, and the diversity makes this growing scene better as the years go by. Later, Nate talks about the frustrations of depression and anxiety. Not only are those two things incredibly difficult to deal with on a daily basis, but oftentimes, guys can feel guilty or even angry that they are experiencing those negative emotions because everything in life is seemingly fine. It's in those moments that it never really helps to have someone just tell you to "look on the brightside" or try to list off all of the great things in your life. What can really help is just having someone to listen and not judge, knowing that depression and anxiety often don't have a cause that we can easily explain away.

Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! This is Furnace Fest Week! Furnace Fest will always hold a special place in the dads' hearts because it's where Nate and Jesse were reunited after years of living apart and the idea to team up on the podcast was born! This week, we're joined by Johnny Grimes, one of the key leaders in Furnace Fest. Johnny has been involved with the festival from its early years, to its recent revival, to its recent buy-out by a larger festival company. Johnny lets us in on his advice for dads out there, as well as behind the scenes on the story of the birth and re-birth of the festival and the events that led to the recent changing of hands. Johnny speaks on the spirit of Furnace Fest and how it remains to this day, no matter who is running things, and gives us a sneak peek into what could be coming down the line for Birmingham's ultimate heavy music festival. Will things stay the same? Will they change? And the biggest question of all...will there be a barrier in The Shed? All that and more on this Furnace Fest Week episode of Dads Who Mosh!

Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! In this very special episode, Nate and Jesse are joined by the hosts of Leave No Doubt, a podcast about fatherhood, Sam Trapkin (Trapped Under Ice) and Cole James (Grief Recovery Method). The dads have a great conversation about what it takes to really be a man for your family. Doing what's best for your family means taking care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. We do our best as dads and husbands when we become someone who is able to be physically strong for their family, but also emotionally available. It's also so important for guys to have brothers around them who they can be open with about their mental and emotional struggles, and know that they won't be pressured to just "get over it", and trust that someone is there to listen and be there for them.

Welcome to the Dads Who Mosh Podcast! Nate and Jesse discuss football season, how much fun it is to discover and share new bands in the hardcore scene, and the struggle as dads to find a balance between allowing your older kids to make their own decisions and have fun while they're still young, and also making the hard decisions for them because you know it's what's best. This week, Nate and Jesse are joined by Carl Severson, owner of Ferret Music, vocalist of Nora, and all-around scene legend. Carl chats with the guys about the history of Ferret music, including some of the legendary albums they put out from bands like Converge, Killswitch Engage and Every Time I Die. They also talk about passing on the love of heavy music to our kids and how his sons have both grown up to love the scene and have their own involvement in it. Towards the end of the conversation, we spend time talking about Carl's friend, and one of the kindest souls in hardcore, Andy Williams.
