Yes, it’s episode 15 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! The second story of season 4 sees not only the end of the wonderful Hartnell era, but the introduction of a foe that will be back for decades to come: The Cybermen. Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis get their first co-writing credit and riff on a truly terrifying theme: what happens if you replace increasing amounts of a person with spare parts? What becomes of their soul? Tim is joined by content creator and camera-script investigator, David Gillespie-Pratt, and we have a very welcome return for vintage TV expert and curator of “From the Archive”, Greg Bakun. Thankfully the team are less care-free than the Cybermen and have greater detective skills that the world’s scientists (which isn’t difficult in this one) as they delve into the story’s successes and failures. Then it’s off on the usual world tour, as we look at what happened to the film prints of The Tenth Planet and what the chances are of ever seeing some more of it! So put on your best snow cap, keep Geneva on hold and join us as we take a very deep dive into The Tenth Planet. This time, Tim is joined by New Zealand missing episode hunter, Neil Lambess. Neil famously found The Lion in 1999 and returned it, alongside Paul Scoones. We interviewed Paul in our third episode and so I was delighted to get the other half of the tale, first hand. Aside from that magnificent discovery, Neil has many memories of watching now missing episodes on transmission in New Zealand which he was happy to share. Neil also has a memory of being shown episodes of The Macra Terror, projected at his school in 1974. How did this come about and crucially, what became of those 16mm films? Could they still be lurking in New Zealand, or do Macra really not exist? Our Executive Producers are Bedwyr Gullidge, Rich Tipple and Anthony Wainer. Cover art by Rhys Williams. Thanks, Rhys! Gerry Davis was a key creative force behind Doctor Who in the mid-1960s, helping ensure that the series would continue onwards. He served as story editor from 1966 to 1967. In that role, he helped steer the show toward a stronger science-fiction focus, emphasizing futuristic concepts and is best known for co-creating the Cybermen alongside Kit Pedler. He also wrote several serials, some of which helped cement the Cybermen’s popularity, and contributed to developing the show’s format during a period of major transition. Gerry’s friend Anthony Clark joined Tim to discuss his own association with the show, and also provided a previously unbroadcast interview with Gerry, which you can now hear for the first time, in which he talks about The Highlanders and The Moonbase. Our Executive Producers are Bedwyr Gullidge, Rich Tipple and Anthony Wainer. Cover art by Rhys Williams. Thanks, Rhys! The fifth story of season 4 sees the continuation of the development of Patrick Troughton’s Doctor and a proper introduction for Jamie. We also have Polly being turned into a fish (almost) and Ben wondering what the future holds, now there’s a strapping young(er) man on the team. But it’s a story that’s often overlooked and almost forgotten, which leaves plenty of scope for insights anew from the assembled shoal of podcasters. Tim Burrows is joined by multimedia producer and DVD range stalwart John Kelly, co-creator of Dalek 63:88, 3D modeller and DWM contributor Gavin Rymill, Missing Episodes Podcast debutant, pianist extraordinaire and creator of “Dudley Simpson is Doctor Who”, Jess Jurkovic, but did they all have a whale of a time with this serial? We also check in with science and astronomy writer Giles Sparrow, to chew over whether the science in the sci-fi works, or does it drive him round the Bends? Under the sea, under the sea, listener it’s better, down where it’s wetter, take it from me. So let’s take a deep dive because there's definitely buried treasure, as we look at The Underwater Menace.
