What It Means to Be a Child of God (John 1:1-13 )

Knowing Jesus: Where Faith, Psychology, and Real Life Meet

Show Notes

What does it mean that Jesus was there "in the beginning" — and why didn't the world recognize Him when He arrived? In this episode, we walk through John 1:1-13 together, slowing down on the verses that are easy to read past. We look at why John opens his gospel so differently from Matthew, Mark, and Luke; what it tells us that Jesus is called "the Word" and "the light"; and why Jesus responded with patience to seekers but firmness with religious gatekeepers who claimed to speak for God. We also sit with one of the most quietly staggering truths in Scripture: that those who receive Jesus are given the right to become children of God. Not employees. Not distant admirers. Children. We talk about why that identity is easy to nod at and hard to actually believe in your bones, and what it looks like to let that truth reshape how you move through your day. Brian Bachman is a licensed professional counselor, and brings both clinical insight and personal honesty to the conversation — including his own struggle with pride, frustration, and the slow work of letting God's truth move from head to heart. Whether you've followed Jesus for decades or you're just curious and exploring, you're welcome here. In this episode:

Why John starts his gospel before creation itself Jesus as "the Word" and "the light" — what those titles actually mean The difference between how Jesus treated seekers vs. religious leaders What it means to be a child of God, and why that truth is harder to believe than we admit An honest reflection on pride, patience, and being "seen" by God

Pornography isn't a declaration of who you are — it's a symptom of what's missing. In this first episode of a special series, licensed counselor and author of "Turn Off Porn, Brian Bachman explores why the church's go-to advice — pray more, read more, try harder — hasn't been working for most people. He unpacks how 200 years of cultural shifts have left us disconnected from purpose, community, and the rhythms God designed us for, creating the exact conditions where addiction thrives. This isn't shame. This is honesty. And it's where real recovery starts.
