Join BYU Professor Casey Griffiths in this episode of Restoration Revealed as we explore Winter Quarters, Nebraska—a critical, yet tragic, stop on the Mormon Trail. Discover how the Saints transformed a wilderness haven into a structured city during the brutal winters of 1846–1847, facing immense suffering and loss, while simultaneously solidifying the future of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Learn how Brigham Young led a vanguard group of around 3,000 Saints from Nauvoo, Illinois, in early 1846, establishing a temporary refuge at Winter Quarters near present-day Omaha, Nebraska, with over 700 homes built in a grid system.
Explore the harsh reality of life in the encampment. Despite careful organization, hundreds (some estimates suggest over 600) of pioneers died from scurvy, malaria, and malnutrition, turning the encampment into a place of profound sacrifice and spiritual resilience.
The episode highlights the pivotal moment in January 1847 when Brigham Young received a crucial revelation from the Lord (now Doctrine and Covenants Section 136). This revelation provided the exact blueprint for organizing the westward journey into structured companies, ensuring the safe migration of thousands across the plains.
This episode of Restoration Revealed uses historical documents and on-location footage to tell the powerful story of a people tested by fire, who emerged from tragedy with a clear path forward to their new home in the West.

Early on Sunday morning, before the sun began to rise, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb to finish a painful task, the burial of her beloved Lord and Master. The pain and agony she must have felt as she mourned the Savior’s death is beyond comprehension. As one of the Lord’s most faithful and devoted followers, Christ’s appearance to Mary that Easter morn, places her as the first witness of the resurrection! Knowing Jesus was willing to reveal himself first to her, gives us all hope that we too can testify of the Savior’s divinity no matter who we are!Uploaded 11-04-20If you benefited from this production and would like to offer a contribution, please visit our sponsor, Scripture Central, to make a donation.
