A Girl, a Gay & a Thermo

8. The Ordinary & The Extraordinary

A Girl, a Gay & a Thermo

Show Notes

Sometimes it's the ordinary things that turn out to be extraordinary. And sometimes it's just an extraordinarily shit week.

This week, we're finding the magic in the mundane. From boiling grains and washing lettuce to chopping salads, whipping up marinades and melting butter, we're asking whether the real value of our Thermomix lies in the everyday jobs rather than the show-stopping recipes.

Speaking of ordinary life, money is flying out the door faster than we can earn it. Vet bills, car repairs and concert tickets... is anyone else feeling personally victimised by their bank account?

In the kitchen, Bronte gets his cob loaf on, graduates to homemade croutons, then promptly phones it in with a Caesar salad. Erin, naturally, makes hers from scratch. Along with fried chicken steak. YUM.

Meanwhile, Bronte launches a daring rescue mission for some mushrooms and parsley facing certain death in his fridge. His husband, as always, remains blissfully unaware that food exists when Bronte leaves the house.

And just when we think life couldn't get more ridiculous, we take a look at the news cycle. Sharks, tigers, rollercoasters, people waking up at their own funerals... and Russell Brand. What an extraordinary collection of horrors.

It's the ordinary, the extraordinary and everything gloriously unhinged in between.

School holidays are FINALLY over and Erin is hanging by a thread. Between endless sleepovers, children who apparently never leave (and have individual egg orders), and Dad landing back in hospital, there’s not much left in the tank.

THE BACHELOR’S HANDBAG Australia’s most reliable dinner date is getting the episode it deserves. But first… obviously we spend a completely reasonable 12 minutes reviewing Kylie’s Grand Final performance before remembering this is allegedly a food podcast. Then we get down to chook business: Coles vs Woolies — who’s got the superior bird? What are we actually DOING with a cooked chook? Viral chicken recipes worth trying Chicken lasagne Peking chook pancakes French onion chicken pie Nagi’s Buffalo Chicken Dip — so rich you may want 000 on standby Because there is SO much more to the humble supermarket chook than sandwiches and sad Tuesday-night salad.

THIS ONE TIME, AT BAND CAMP… Yes, Erin actually plays the flute. Yes, she went to band camp. And yes, this week’s chat about our kids getting into trouble somehow turned into Erin & Bronte confessing their own school misdemeanours. Also on this week’s completely sensible food podcast...
