Leadership, Workforce Growth, and Building High Reliability in Healthcare with Alison Flynn Gaffney

Becker’s Healthcare Podcast

Summary

Hospital and health system leaders are facing a challenging strategic landscape characterized by market consolidation, stagnant reimbursement rates, urgent tech investments, and ongoing workforce issues. The 14th annual CEO CFO Roundtable by Ecker, set for November 2-5 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, is poised to address these issues by bringing together over 1,500 executives and 400 speakers. The event aims to help leaders refine their priorities based on the real decisions they will face in the upcoming year.

In an exclusive interview, Scott Becker spoke with Allison Flynn Gaffney, CEO of Banner University Medicine in Tucson, about her extensive career and the critical challenges facing healthcare today. Gaffney described Banner as the largest nonprofit, level-one trauma center and academic medical center in Southern Arizona, serving a population of 1.5 million. She emphasized the importance of collaboration and community engagement in healthcare, highlighting that the organization's mission extends beyond treating patients to promoting health and wellness within the community.

Gaffney, who has spent over 33 years in various roles within healthcare, also acknowledged the role of mentorship in her career progression. She credited a past leader for encouraging her to aim higher than she initially thought possible, an experience that shaped her leadership approach and philosophy.

Banner Health's evolution over the years, especially under the leadership of former executives like Dr. Peter Fine and Amy Perry, has focused on keeping patients healthy and reducing hospitalizations, reflecting a commitment to value-based care. Gaffney pointed out the importance of empowering healthcare teams and maintaining transparency to foster a culture of trust and high reliability.

As the healthcare landscape changes, Gaffney noted the critical need to address physician shortages while enhancing training programs. Banner recently expanded its School of Medicine's enrollment to better serve community needs. Gaffney underscored the importance of advanced practice providers like nurse practitioners in providing care, alongside physicians.

Looking ahead, Gaffney expressed optimism about the future of healthcare, focusing on creating an inclusive and supportive environment for staff while continuously seeking collaboration with community members. The commitment to listening and responding to community and employee feedback marks a significant step for Banner Health as it strives to improve health outcomes across Southern Arizona.
