ZSL's Wildest Moments

The Wild Hare and the Author

ZSL's Wildest Moments

Show Notes

For Sunday Times bestselling author Chloe Dalton, a chance encounter with a tiny, orphaned leveret on a quiet country lane became a life-changing experience - one that would reshape how she saw the natural world.

In this episode of Wildest Moments, host Ben Fogle speaks with Chloe about rescuing and raising the young hare during lockdown, forming an extraordinary bond while learning to respect its wild nature. What began as an act of care became a powerful lesson in coexistence, as the hare grew and ultimately returned to the wild.

Joining the conversation is ZSL wildlife veterinarian Dr Katharina Seilern-Macpherson, who works on ZSL's Garden Wildlife Health project - a national programme monitoring the health of Britain's native wildlife.

Together, they explore what it means to live alongside wildlife in our everyday spaces - from the emotional reality of caring for a wild animal, to the science behind safeguarding the species in our gardens. From hares to hedgehogs, they reflect on how wildlife health is important to all life on earth.

About Wildest Moments: Hosted by Ben Fogle and created in partnership with Mountain Warehouse, Wildest Moments is a podcast from ZSL (Zoological Society of London) exploring the surprising, emotional and transformative encounters people have had with wildlife. New episodes are released on the third Thursday of every month. Launched as part of ZSL's 200th anniversary, the series celebrates over two centuries of inspiring closer connections between people and the natural world.
