S4 E3: "Escaping Addiction" with Psychotherapist & Author (Free Fall), Bradley Thomas Smith

The MANiCURE. Cut

Show Notes

Amberleigh dives deeper into her Feature Story of the Summer 2025 Issue of MANiCURE. Magazine, psychotherapist and author, Bradley Thomas Smith. Bradley is the author of FREE FALL, Two Decades of Rock 'n' Roll and Addiction, which is an extraordinary account of escaping addiction. FREE FALL is a true-life memoir about how Bradley turned to alcohol as a 9-year-old boy at his mother's funeral and, from there, experienced a life of foster care, adoption, emancipation, homelessness, addiction, a 20 year journey of seeking out alcohol and music to soothe his pain. Bradley eloquently explains his experience of feeling abandoned by his mother, blaming himself, and believing he was unlovable. With that belief came behaviors of isolation as an attempt to save others from seeing his brokenness, and ways to avoid judgment of others so he wouldn't need to disconnect and soothe himself from things that would provoke him. Amberleigh and Bradley go into the 5 reasons for addiction: to soothe, to connect, to compensate, to detach, and/or to punish. They also discuss self-deception in late stage addiction and how the value system gets mixed up, blurring the cues of safety, comfort, and cravings. Take a listen to hear a VERY unique and personal perspective of addiction: the idea that addiction is more of a disorder than a disease, the stigmas surrounding it, and even the significant predictors of addiction, and how, in spite of transgenerational trauma, genetics, mental illness, negative childhood experiences, or economic insecurity, courage, authenticity, and self love...and a little bit of music...can help guide you home. In this episode of The Ask Amberleigh Show, Amberleigh sits down with Lizette Alvarado, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, founder of Venus Concierge Luxury Home Care and owner of Syn Skin Aesthetics & Wellness, to talk about the often-overlooked pieces of healing: nutrition, vitamins, genetics, personalized care, and the human side of medicine. Lizette shares her perspective from years of advanced clinical experience and hands-on patient care, including why understanding an individual's health, nutritional status and genetic makeup can matter when recovering from illness, surgery, or even an afternoon slump. The conversation also explores something that doesn't always get enough attention in modern medicine: bedside manner. How you're treated when you're vulnerable matters. Feeling seen, heard, cared for and safe can be a very different experience from simply being treated, which is what Lizette's business, Venus Concierge Luxury Home Care, is all about. Amberleigh and Lizette also talk about the MANiCURE. Multivitamin Cocktail, a nutrient-focused wellness formula designed to support the body's nutritional needs during times when you may need a little extra support. Together, Amberleigh and Lizette discuss: • Why vitamins and nutritional status matter • How genetics can influence the way our bodies respond and recover from sickness, surgery, and everyday life • The importance of personalized care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach • What patients should consider before undergoing surgery • Why recovery deserves as much attention as the procedure itself • The role of compassionate bedside manner in the healing experience • What concierge recovery care can look like • How being cared for physically and emotionally can change the experience of recovery About Lizette Alvarado, MSN, APRN, FNP-C Lizette is the Founder & CEO of Venus Concierge Luxury Home Care, providing personalized post-operative and recovery care throughout southeast Louisiana. Amberleigh sits down with Taylor Hutti Macrae, influencer and long-time high school friend, where they discuss ghosts, anxiety, and coming full circle! Amberleigh and Taylor go down memory lane, remembering the high points of classes and concerts together throughout high school, as well as the low points of Hurricane Katrina and anxiety, where Amberleigh touches on things that help. Taylor talks about her experiences after college graduation, working in NYC fashion, with the 'Devil Wears Prada'-like long days of working at designer brand fashion houses and unexpectedly meeting her future husband, model and actor, Logan Macrae (best known for his role in the movie, "Where The Crawdads Sing"). Amberleigh points out the differences in moving away and coming back home, and the gratitude that comes with that experience. They both then deep dive into metaphysical concepts: ghosts, hauntings, death and the afterlife, out-of-body experiences, lucid dreaming, and even personal experiences of seeing apparitions, staying at The Myrtles Plantation, and interacting with deceased family members. Taylor also shares her discovery of what was at the root of her debilitating anxiety (hint: vitamin deficiency!), her obsession with Halloween and Casper (haha), and her semi-recent launch of being a social media influencer, proving that it's never too late to start something new, in spite of the mental struggles and fear that can surround us during those instances. Amberleigh showcases that Taylor's quick success is due to her raw, authentic, and unique approach...something that can be a key in any new endeavor. If you've ever felt haunted by your past, unsure about your path, or drawn to the mystical and mysterious, this episode will meet you where you are — with laughter, insight, and a gentle reminder that it's never too late to come full circle.
