The Autumn Garden Apothecary In this episode of Nature & Nourish, I'm opening up my autumn apothecary and sharing the seasonal herbs, traditional preparations and plant wisdom I return to as we move through autumn. Herbalism was the gateway to my relationship with the natural world, and I share a little of that journey, from childhood fascinations with plants and natural formulations to the herbs I now work with on our farm in Northern Ireland. We explore three of my favourite autumn herbs: yarrow, with its rich folklore, associations with protection and traditional uses; elder, a generous hedgerow plant I've known since childhood; and burdock, a deeply nourishing root with a particular affinity for autumn. Along the way, I share some of my favourite traditional herbal preparations, including my elder tea, burdock decoction and the classic Gypsy Cold & Flu Syrup. https://substack.com/@beckyocole https://patreon.com/@beckyocole In this episode: autumn herbalism • the garden apothecary • folk herbalism • yarrow folklore • elderberries • burdock root • traditional herbal preparations • spiced elderberry syrup • Gypsy Cold & Flu Syrup • seasonal living • natural formulations • plant lore • nature connection • herbalism for beginners A note on safety: This episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to replace medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. The Living Year: Autumn In this seasonal ode, I take you with me to our farm and cottage here in Northern Ireland, noticing the changes happening and the harvests being gathered in. I talk about why these transitional seasons have always captured my imagination. We explore the bittersweet nature of autumn, its lessons in letting go and the natural cycle of growth, abundance, decline and renewal. As part of my seasonal almanac, I also delve into the traditional names and meanings of the autumn moons and months, the Celtic Wheel of the Year and Samhain. And, of course, there's an autumnal apple cake recipe along the way!
