Live at Miu Miu Literary Club: Author Naoise Dolan on Sex Education, Female Socialisation, and Millennial Malaise
Deep Read with Phoebe LovattShow Notes
This special episode was recorded live at the Miu Miu Literary Club, which took place on 9th-10th April 2025 in Milan. Under the direction of Mrs Miuccia Prada, and now in its second iteration, the Literary Club is the latest in a series of cultural experiences devised by Miu Miu to promote the arts. - Naoise Dolan is an Irish author whose first book, ‘Exciting Times’, was published to widespread acclaim in 2020. Naoise followed this with the equally well-received ‘The Happy Couple’ in 2023. In both books, Naoise tackles the confusion of contemporary life with precision and wit: her characters grapple with sexuality, housing instability, social media malaise, and our growing class disparities. At the same time, Naoise brings a fresh, often unpredictable perspective to the timeless topics of education, girlhood, and desire that inform this year’s Literary Club curation. - Deep Reading Lists can be found at phoebe.substack.com - @phoebelovatt @phoebelovattpubliclibrary @naoisedolan @miumiu

Sarah Wilson is a journalist, activist, and author of a new book: I Eat the Stars: How to Live Fully and Beautifully in a Collapsing World. After years of climate activism, Sarah began to question whether our insistence on hope might be preventing us from confronting an uncomfortable truth: that the complex systems underpinning our capitalist world may already be collapsing. In this conversation, we explore what collapse actually means, the difference between the end of capitalism and the end of humanity, and how community, resilience and connection might help us navigate an uncertain future. A note to listeners: This episode explores potentially overwhelming subjects, including climate change and societal collapse. Please listen at your own pace. Trend forecaster, writer, and artist Emily Segal joins me to talk about taste, trends, technology, and her work as Head of Brand for Readme – a new dating app for literature lovers. We also discuss how trend forecasting became a content vertical, the aestheticisation of reading, and what today’s 'creative recession' tells us about the state of culture. Rose Colcord is the founder of Cou Cou Intimates, the 100% organic cotton essentials brand she's built over the past five years into a cult favourite among stylish, creative women worldwide. A former philosophy major with a particular interest in ecofeminism, Rose has resisted the pressure on founders (especially women) to become the face of their own brands, choosing instead to let the product - as well as its artful campaigns and collaborations - to speak for itself. In this episode, she talks about the inspiration and intention behind Cou Cou, her love of literature, and how becoming a first-time mother has reshaped the way she thinks about work, rest, and presence.
My guest today is the writer and entrepreneur, Trinity Mouzon Wofford, who is the author a beautiful new cookbook titled: 'Eating at Home, The Nourishing Practice of Everyday Cooking'. We spoke about the remarkable lineage of women she comes from, building and reshaping a successful business, the realities of motherhood, only-child psychology, and the pitfalls of “wellness” as we’ve come to know it. Find Deep Reading lists at phoebe.substack.com - Sandeep Salter is a friend who is like family to me — we met on the first day of secondary school in London and I spent a considerable chunk of my teenage years in her family home. She has lived in New York since her university days, and her CV is a Google Map of the most distinctive independent businesses in the city: Printed Matter, McNally Jackson, Goods for the Study, Picture Room, and now Salter House — the family brand she runs with her husband Carson, which is best known for the cotton nightdresses that inspired a thousand imitators. In this conversation, we talk about the discipline that comes with growing up as the child of dancers, the efficiency of feeling genuinely comfortable in your own skin, and Sandeep's commitment to building something at her own pace in a city that champions speed above all else. - @phoebelovatt @deepread.phoebelovatt @salter.house
