Solar Thrifting and Silver: How Industrial Demand Shapes the Price

FXNX Trade Podcast

Summary

The silver market faces an unprecedented 46.3 million ounce global deficit despite a significant reduction in silver usage by solar panel manufacturers. In 2026, these manufacturers successfully decreased their per watt silver consumption by 19 percent, a move that typically would lead to lower prices. However, the opposite has occurred due to surging industrial demand, particularly from the rapid deployment of solar farms, electric vehicles, and AI computing hardware. This phenomenon, known as the Jevons Paradox, illustrates how increased efficiency can lead to greater overall consumption.

The supply side of the silver market is constrained by the fact that 74 percent of mined silver is a byproduct of base metal mining, such as lead and copper. This rigid supply chain means that even with rising prices, miners are unlikely to increase silver extraction unless there is a corresponding rise in the prices of the primary metals they are mining. As a result, the market continues to experience a structural deficit, with above-ground physical stocks of silver plummeting by over 762 million ounces from 2021 to 2026.

Traders are advised to approach silver as a hybrid commodity, closely monitoring the gold-silver ratio to identify entry points. Unlike gold, which is primarily a precious metal, silver has a significant industrial demand component. A GSR above 85 indicates that the market may be undervaluing silver relative to its fundamentals. With reserves dwindling, the market is highly sensitive to sudden demand shocks, which could lead to volatile price movements. Traders are encouraged to focus on manufacturing cycles and industrial purchasing managers' indexes as key indicators for silver's price trajectory, rather than solely relying on inflation data.
