Public Service Announcement: The Alarming Rise of AI Panic Decisions and Reckless Advice

Show Notes

Happy Friday, everyone! While preparing to head into an extended Labor Day weekend here in the U.S., I wasn’t originally planning to record an episode. However, something’s been building that I couldn’t ignore. So, this week’s update is a bit different. Shorter. Less news. But arguably more important.

Think of this one as a public service announcement, because I’ve been noticing an alarming trend both in the headlines and in private conversations. People are starting to make life-altering decisions because of AI fear. And unfortunately, much of that fear is being fueled by truly awful advice from high-level tech leaders.

So in this abbreviated episode, I break down two growing trends that I believe are putting people at real risk. It’s not because of AI itself, but because of how people are reacting to it.

With that, let’s get into it.

⸻

The Dangerous Rise of AI Panic Decisions Some are dropping out of grad school. Others are cashing out their retirement accounts. And many more are quietly rearranging their lives because they believe the AI end times are near. In this first segment, I start by breaking down the realities of the situation then focusing on some real stories. My goal is to share why these reactions, though in some ways grounded in reality and emotionally understandable, can lead to long-term regret. Fear may be loud, but it’s a terrible strategy.

⸻

Terrible Advice from the Top: Why Degrees Still Matter (Sometimes) A Google GenAI executive recently went on record saying young people shouldn’t even bother getting law or medical degrees. And, he’s not alone. There’s a rising wave of tech voices calling for people to abandon traditional career paths altogether. I unpack why this advice is not only reckless, but dangerously out of touch with how work (and systems) actually operate today. Like many things, there are glimmers of truth blown way out of proportion. The goal here isn’t to defend degrees but explain why discernment is more important than ever.

In late 2022, GenAI went mainstream and sent organizations and people scrambling to get their arms around the fundamentals of working with chatbots. Four years later, most people still haven't mastered the fundamental, yet we are all being thrust into AI's Trojan Horse moment. The tools being handed to us now are so much more than typing words into a text box. We’re being actively pressured to hand over operational control, digital credentials, and human agency to autonomous software without giving it a second thought.

Every headline you read right now claims software engineering is dead. In fact, many "futurists" predicted there would be no need for humans to do it by now. Allegedly, AI is replacing coders overnight, and early-career talent doesn't stand a chance. However, if you're willing to slow down and actually talk to people in the trenches, the reality looks very different.

AI safety researchers are walking away from millions in unvested equity to take a public stand against tech labs racing toward the apocalypse. Industry leaders are responding with polite, unified calls to "slow down." It's a great distraction, but if you cut through the noise, you realize the immediate threat to your organization isn't AGI. It's corporate drift, empty values, and the silent departure of your top talent.

AI is apparently turning us all into robots. Algorithms are rewiring our brains, flattening human nature, and ending authentic selfhood as we know it. There is even a fancy new (and hard-to-pronounce) academic term for it: Robotoid Humanness. However, if you avoid reacting to the headline and actually look at the research, you'll quickly realize this isn't an inevitable fate that's been sealed. It's an opportunity to examine our passive choices and consider the risks.

As tech giants continue announcing massive multi-gigawatt facilities permitted to match the carbon output of entire nations, the default reaction is often polarized, ideological debate. However, if we stopped arguing for a minute, we’d likely find we all agree trying to infinitely scale compute through brute force is more than an environmental topic. It's creating a major infrastructure crisis that affects us all.
