Every time you fill a vacancy, you have to make a choice: do you promote someone from within, who you may know quite well, or take a punt on someone you don’t?
Over my corporate career, I made both calls frequently. Sometimes, I got to pat myself on the back for how brilliant I was, but occasionally the resulting hire was so disastrous that I looked like a complete muppet in front of my team (and my boss)!
Most leaders have no real way of determining who might be ready for promotion… it’s all guesswork and gut feel. They rely on factors like a confident interview performance, a firm handshake, or a sharp dress sense… and then they’re completely mystified when it doesn't work out.
