EPISODE 3 | Melvin Odoom | BBC Radio1 | From "you don't have a voice for radio" to award-winning radio host

If you have listened to BBC Radio One or Kiss FM you may recognise the voice of this weeks guest, an award winning radio broadcaster who currently hosts Radio 1 Live lounge with Ricky and Charlie. Having won two industry awards at Kiss FM including the prestigious, ‘Best breakfast radio show’ in 2012 to broadcasting over the BBC Radio One airwaves since 2019, Melvin Odoom is one of the top names in UK radio today.

But what did it take to get to this level of success?

From being bullied at secondary school and discovering “my sense of humour is my weapon”, yet still feeling scared years on, “people don’t understand the power a bully has over you”. From being rejected at University due to low grades to then begging another University for a place at clearing, Melvin details how this rejection was his biggest blessing. From his first unpaid TV appearance dancing the robot whilst dressed as a dinosaur to then establishing his presence on TV alongside an award winning children’s show. From experiencing racism in both his personal and professional life coupled with George Floyd headlines led him to an unhappy, isolated place, questioning, ‘why do people hate black people?’.

Melvin’s story inspires hope in a competitive world and industry, showing that despite judgement and set backs, leading with kindness, generosity and giving back to younger generations is a strength to his success.
