What if the thing helping support your spine is also making you believe your body can’t support itself? A scoliosis brace can serve an important purpose but stopping a curve from getting worse isn't the same as teaching your body how to move, build strength, manage pain, or feel confident. When treatment becomes focused only on the spine, it's easy to forget the whole person living inside that body. In this episode of Ruth's Rant, I share my personal experience wearing a hard-shell scoliosis brace at age 14 and explain why I believe scoliosis care needs to go beyond the brace. I explore the difference between using a tool for support and becoming dependent on that tool, while also addressing the emotional side of bracing for both children and adults. You’ll discover: Why stopping scoliosis from progressing is different from teaching your body how to move and build strength. How to recognize the difference between appropriately using a brace for support and becoming dependent on it. Why the emotional impact of bracing, including frustration, embarrassment, confidence, and body image, deserves to be part of the conversation. Play the episode to rethink what scoliosis treatment can look like and learn how to work toward greater strength, confidence, freedom, and quality of life in the body you have. In this episode, you’ll discover:Why those cute strappy tops and underwire bras are a no go for scoliosis.
