Episode 75: The Anatomy of an Artwork

Art Ladders: The Creative Climb

Show Notes

We had a lovely conversation today on the making of art. Each of us has our own process with specific tools and art materials and in this episode we share them with you, our audience. Even if you are not an artist, you may find insights into the creative practice that fires up your imagination to see things in a different light.

This episode is dedicated to visual artist and fine art framing designer, Marilyn Darlene Madden, 1939-2019. She was a designer at Good's of Evanston and worked with Armin. She had exquisite taste in art and design. As a frame designer, her aesthetic was elegant sophistication.

Over the next couple of days I will add links to the supplies we use but for now, I wanted to get this episode up and running for listening. You can always direct message Art Ladders on Facebook or Instagram.

This episode is about staying curious, experimental, and joyful in the creative process. The conversation centers on what it means to approach art with a beginner’s mind, especially when you already have skills, habits, and expectations that can get in the way. Val and Armin also reflect on burnout, imposter syndrome, and how artistic confidence can return through play, optimism, and making work without overthinking the result. Valerie Allen and Armin Mersmann talk candidly about the artist website struggle and why it matters for visibility, professionalism, and sales. They compare website upkeep with social media, break down what a website actually needs to do, and argue that an imperfect website is usually better than no website at all. In this episode, Valerie and Armin share practical advice for artists who feel stuck on the admin side of promoting their work. They cover everything from domain names and image updates to newsletters, shop pages, and why your website should support your art instead of overpowering it. Key topics The “elephant in the room” for artists: keeping a website current Why Instagram and Facebook are useful, but not a substitute for a real website How website maintenance becomes part of the artist’s job, not separate from it The frustration of image sizing, order, page structure, and keeping old work from taking over Why a website can help turn visitors into email subscribers through a newsletter signup The value of having a shop or direct purchasing option on the site How galleries, collectors, and jurors use websites and resumes to judge professionalism Why clean design matters more than flashy design on an artist website The importance of current CV details, exhibition history, and juror names Why artists should reserve a strong domain name early, even if the site is unfinished

Art Ladders The Creative Climb - Episode 121: Summer Edition Valerie Allen and Armin return with a motivating conversation for artists heading into exhibition season. The episode focuses on the social life of an artist and why showing up at openings, receptions, fundraisers, and artist talks matters for both community and career. They also share memorable opening-night stories and a few simple ways to feel more confident when you walk into the room. Key topics In this episode, Valerie and Armin discuss the artist’s dual role as maker and marketer, and why both matter. They explore why attendance at art openings is not optional networking theater, but part of showing up for yourself and your work. They talk through how to handle the first 20 minutes of an opening, especially when nerves spike and you need time to settle in. Valerie shares a simple artist introduction approach, including a short elevator speech that quickly explains her work in abstraction and mixed media. Armin describes the pressure many artists feel around saying “I’m an artist” out loud, especially early in their careers. They compare practical ways to be ready for conversations, including having artwork accessible on a phone or carrying printed postcards. The conversation covers etiquette at group shows, including why it’s important not to make someone else’s opening about your own promotion. They discuss clothing for openings, emphasizing comfort, confidence, and dressing in a way that feels authentic rather than staged. Valerie and Armin stress the value of celebrating solo shows and receptions as milestones, not just obligations. The episode closes with a reminder to introduce artists to one another, build community, and lean into the unexpected connections that happen at art events.
