When you think of a professional association, the Ontario Medical Association or the Law Society probably come to mind. But as industries change, so do the ways people organize. Kattie Laur probably wouldn’t call herself the president of a professional association, but she’s the founder and force behind Pod the North, a newsletter turned community that connects Canada’s podcasting industry. What started as a way to answer her own questions about a fractured industry now reaches more than 2,000 readers, and people across the field turn to her for answers.
In this episode, Gabby and Kattie talk about: Why Canadian podcasters need a collective voice, and why money is the industry’s biggest challenge What it’s like to start advocacy work when you’ve never done it before Imposter syndrome, big ideas, and accepting that advocacy is a long game The “can’t stop” feeling that drives people to build community, and where it comes from Why Canadian stories matter, from parenting podcasts that understand maternity leave to Canadian True Crime and Connie Walker’s Stolen
Kattie is a podcast producer, consultant, and host of Canardian, a show where she gossips about Canadian hometowns with fellow Canadian podcasters. The Real Influencers of Canada is a show about how we strengthen Canada by bringing people together. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
More from The Real Influencers (of Canada)
If you’re disillusioned with politics in Canada and feel there’s nothing you can do about it, you probably don’t know about riding associations. There are well over 1,000 of them across the country, they shape who ends up on your ballot, and any Canadian can join one.
All over the world, a quiet force is shaping communities: mom groups. They may look quaint from the outside, but they have real reach and real influence.
