Football Ferns didn't play any games in Panama and their wonky World Cup prep continues, while Wellington Phoenix women are laying foundations for future of kiwi football. All three New Zealand A-League teams have home games to start their season with Phoenix men trying to shake some iffy form and Auckland FC leaning on their development system.
(00:00) NZ Cricket (37:35) Mindfulness (40:50) Sydney Roosters (01:01:13) Tauihi (01:10:39) NZ Breakers (01:24:58) All Whites (01:34:10) Local football This week in the Niche Cache we start by breaking down the New Zealand Cricket dramas that escalated last week with prominent kiwi cricket folks going public with their dissent. We chat through the T20 league structure, good and bad things from NZC and plenty more that falls into the state of cricket in Aotearoa. Then we pay respect to Sydney Roosters who are NRL and NRLW champions as well as being the best organisation recruiting from Aotearoa, before rolling into a few Tauihi basketball deep cuts. NZ Breakers have had a decent week in the Australian NBL and we update their mahi, then we check in with All Whites who have been scoring goals around Chris Wood. National League football is in motion and we finish with a few standouts from the local scene.

There are a few kiwi footballers on the move like Rebecca Lake in the A-League and Grace Bartlett joining Peterborough United as well, then we swing back around to basketball with NZ Breakers and Tauihi updates.
(00:00) NZ Warriors vs Knights (49:47) Mindfulness (53:46) NZ Breakers (01:06:08) Stipe Ukich and All Whites (01:14:41) - Wellington Phoenix (01:26:07) White Ferns (01:40:42) Rachin Ravindra NZ Warriors finished their 2026 season with lots of bad vibes after the NRL team matched the NRLW team's late season slump. Warriors lost their second NRL Finals game in Auckland in a row with the Eden Park defeat to Knights and left a pretty stink taste heading into the summer. Knights had Kalyn Ponga, Phoenix Crossland and Francis Manuleleua showing out on their returns to Aotearoa. NZ Breakers won their first game of the NBL season led by kiwi big man Sam Mennenga and Stipe Ukich is a player to watch out for with All Whites as the prepare for an international football window. Wellington Phoenix made a flurry of signings last week with Milly Clegg the most notable of them, while Chris Greenacre continues to build a solid men's squad. White Ferns need a new coach and Rachin Ravindra got injured, both of which involve some goofy NZ Cricket antics.
