Kohberger’s Plea Fight Got WHAT New Court Deadline?!
True Crime Today | Daily True Crime News & InterviewsShow Notes
Bryan Kohberger was supposed to argue that the judge who sentenced him could no longer be impartial. Instead, Judge Steven Hippler canceled the October 15, 2026, recusal hearing and the June 2027 proceedings. An amended scheduling order replaced those dates with filing and evidence deadlines, leaving the ultimate fight over Kohberger's guilty plea undecided. The stakes begin with his July 2025 admission of guilt. Kohberger pleaded guilty to murdering University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms without parole. A year later, his handwritten post-conviction petition alleged that his former attorneys failed him and that he was pressured into the plea. Prosecutors have asked the court to reject those assertions without an evidence hearing. His appointed attorney Greg Rauch separately seeks Hippler's removal. Rauch argues the judge's sentencing comments reveal a settled opinion of Kohberger and could affect how he judges the petition. The defense also cites a denied continuance shortly before the plea and requests that the matter return to Latah County. Whether those events meet the legal standard for disqualification remains contested. The updated calendar gives the defense until January 13, 2027, to amend the petition. Evidence gathering must finish by July 7. If motions have not resolved the remaining issues, the sides can contact the court by August 2 about arranging a status conference and possible evidentiary hearing. Tony Brueski and Eric Faddis untangle the difference between scheduling and substance. The case has no new trial date, no order allowing the guilty plea to be withdrawn, and no ruling granting the request for a different judge. For the families, even the question of whether the court will hear more evidence now stretches further into 2027. Ambulance driver Leo Hengstler took the stand and testified to something no book, no movie, and no dramatization has ever included. He heard Debbie tell her father at the scene while Alan Bono lay dying: "You know how he gets when he's been drinking." Not possession. Drinking. Debbie had watched five blackout episodes after Arne challenged the demon — she said each one looked exactly like David's. But the Washington Post described a different man — quick to anger, possessive, carrying a 5-inch folding knife since childhood. Carl Jr. raised another detail the supernatural accounts never addressed: rumors that Debbie had been involved with Bono. She acknowledged a past relationship. February 16, 1981. Bono drank for hours, grabbed a 9-year-old girl. Arne told him to release her. Bono was dead on his own lawn. Alex Murdaugh is heading to an April 2027 retrial, and Matthew Farwell is on trial in Boston for Sandra Birchmore's death. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins me to break down both. Murdaugh's defense can now test unidentified DNA from Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and phone, and it wants answers about a police officer friend who, the defense says, prosecutors suggested reached the scene early. Prosecutors won't say whether a grand jury exists. In the Birchmore case, prosecutors say Farwell learned of a friend's January 20, 2021 call to Stoughton police before Sandra died. His DNA, they say, was on the strap. The officers who first investigated testified about what they skipped. And the chief who exposed them is suing over a report she says she was told to destroy, which Thomas Calter denies. Eric explains what each jury may hear. One of Timmy Gibson's pastor friends decided to be honest on his annual licensing form and admitted to marijuana use. He was stripped of his credentials and removed from ministry. Gibson says every other pastor he knew lied on the same form. On Homicide Happy Hour, Gibson described the Assemblies of God licensing process as a pure honor system with no verification. The system protects itself by punishing honesty. Gibson says that architecture is how JP Miller allegedly operated without accountability for years. Miller structured his church so nobody could override him. Miller faces one count of cyberstalking and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. He has pleaded not guilty. He is not charged in the death of his wife Mica. Tony raised the subject of Suzie Skinner, Miller's current wife, whose first husband died under circumstances both hosts described as mysterious. David Glatzel told his family he saw Arne Johnson killing someone. He was 11 years old. That vision came months before February 16, 1981 — before Johnson stabbed Alan Bono on a kennel lawn in Brookfield, Connecticut, the town's first homicide in 193 years. David's brother Carl was in the same room the day it allegedly started. Carl saw nothing. Their parents divided over what was real. Their father slapped David during an episode — he stopped immediately. The Warrens arrived and the family started recording everything on cassette. Those tapes survived. On them, a child's voice drops into something guttural, screaming obscenities while his mother holds him down. The Catholic Church sent priests but drew the line at a formal exorcism. Then Arne Johnson challenged the demon to take him instead. David got better. Arne started having blackouts. Sandra Birchmore was a child in a police youth program when officers allegedly began targeting her. She was twelve or thirteen years old. The program had no meaningful oversight or background checks on the officers who ran it. Years later, when Sandra was found dead, local investigators treated Matthew Farwell — the man now charged with her murder — as a colleague, not a suspect. He wasn't interrogated on camera. Building surveillance allegedly placed him at her apartment during the critical window. No one sought a warrant. The case was ruled self-inflicted and closed. The FBI had to take the case because local law enforcement wouldn't investigate its own officers. Other officers — Robert Devine and William Farwell — have been named in the alleged conduct but face no federal charges. The same investigative bodies here overlap with those in the Karen Read case. The federal trial is underway, but it targets one man. The department that gave its officers unsupervised access to a child remains intact.
