Roll With The Punches

Crisis, Chaos & Chick Flicks | Dave Greenberg - 1021

Roll With The Punches

Show Notes

Dave Greenberg is one of those blokes who has done more wild sh*t before breakfast than most of us will do in a lifetime. Born in New York, he knew at eight years old he wanted to be a fireman, saved his first life at thirteen doing CPR on a stranger in the street, then somehow ended up in New Zealand doing more than 4,000 missions on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Ya know, just easing into life gently. This chat went everywhere, which is exactly how I like it. Rescue helicopters, farmers finding wildly inventive ways to injure themselves, jumping into the ocean from a hovering chopper, crisis training, mindset, adrenaline, identity, ageing, pressure, and why chick flicks were apparently Dave’s emotional pressure valve. Sure didn’t see that one coming, but here we are. What I loved most about this conversation was the bit underneath all the good yarns. Dave talks about the difference between assumed readiness and observed behaviour, which is basically what we reckon we’ll do under pressure versus what we actually do when life says, 'Righto superstar, your turn.'

Why do we keep getting in our own way, even when we bloody know better? Beck King and I get stuck into the patterns, fears and stories that keep us repeating the same shit, why the problem isn't always the problem, and what it takes to actually make a change. Beck shares some of her own journey through depression, anxiety and grief, and we talk about why knowing what to do and actually doing it are two very different things. Because let's be honest, most of us don't need another book, podcast or course telling us what to do (except this one, obviously 😂). We need to figure out why we're not doing the bloody thing in the first place. If you're sick of getting in your own way, this one's for you. How much of your potential are you leaving on the table because you're waiting for the right time to get your sh*t together? We do we humans cling to comfort, certainty and the familiar, even when they're the very things keeping us stuck? Harps and I bang on in this ep about the stories we tell ourselves, the ways we resist the things that could help us grow, and why being willing to suck at something is often the price of actually getting better at it. I share a few recent realisations about myself and my tendency to resist the very help for, insist on doing things my own way, and then discover that the thing I was pushing back against was actually pretty bloody useful. Whoopies. 😂 But here's the thing. Ya don't need to have it all figured out... Ya don't need to feel confident... And ya definitely don't need to wait for the stars to align. Being willing to adapt, do things differently, learn as you go, and take action before you feel completely comfortable is where it's at! And if you're waiting for the perfect time to start, take a look at your watch now... I think it's bloody time! Why do we sometimes find it easier to jump off a cliff, swim in massive surf or lift a stupidly heavy weight than have an honest conversation about how we're actually feeling? Well, these are some of the questions Scotty and I get stuck into as we explore the whole hard things conversation, and why the thing that looks courageous on the outside isn't always the thing we're actually scared of. So if you're up for a chat about why we deliberately put ourselves in dangerous situations, how our childhoods shape the way we operate, and why some of us would rather do everything the hard way than ask for a bloody hand... this might be the one for you! Scotty shares some exceptional life tips, including how his fear of looking stupid has sometimes seen him throw a metaphorical hand grenade into a situation rather than admit he doesn't know how to do something. Which, let's be honest, is one way to handle it. Not necessarily the best way, though. There's a bit of ADHD, a few uncomfortable truths, some excellent examples of Scotty being Scotty, and a reminder that doing hard things is pretty bloody useful. But understanding WHY we're doing them is where the rubber really hits the road. G'day whippersnappers. No guest this ep. Just you and me, sitting down for a chat about change. I've been having heaps of conversations lately while building Strong AF, and so many of them have brought me back to the same question: if I keep doing what I'm doing now, where does this take me? Because we are what we repeatedly do. Not what we intend to do. Not what we say we value. Not what we did six months ago. I'm getting into stories we tell ourselves, the identities we build, the way we speak to ourselves, and why wanting to change and actually being willing to change are two very different things. I also get into something I've come to believe pretty strongly: your body is the consequence, not the problem. Especially as women and as we get older and our bodies start responding differently to the things we've always done, the answer isn't automatically to eat less and do more. And then I give you something ridiculously simple you can actually do TODAY. Do one thing. Do it first thing in the morning. Do it again tomorrow. Then again. Because change doesn't require you to move mountains on day one. It requires you to start becoming the person you say you want to be Give this one a listen and then go do the bloody thing.

Vicki Connor has been through... well, honestly, I'm not sure how to describe it without sounding like I'm making sh*t up. A serious head injury that changed her personality. Type 1 diabetes from the age of seven. Major surgery at 15. Elite sport. Abusive relationships. Severe depression. A complicated pregnancy. A massive postpartum haemorrhage. Early menopause. Cancer. Losing both her parents. And then, just last year, a haemorrhagic stroke that left her having to learn to walk and talk again. And yet, the thing that has probably shaped her most isn't any one of those things. It's the identity she built around being 'strong'. Vicki talks about how being the strong one became something she was praised for from a very young age. She became the person who could handle anything, push through anything and never need anyone. And for a long time, that looked like resilience. Until it didn't. Because when being strong becomes who you are, asking for help starts to feel like failure. This is such a bloody good conversation about resilience, identity, recovery, trauma, asking for help and what happens when the thing that got you through life starts getting in the way of actually living it.
