The Story Of Ancient Egypt's Mysterious Queens | Lost Queens | Timeline

The podcast explores the significant roles of women in ancient Egypt, highlighting their power and influence throughout history. It begins with a focus on Cleopatra, but quickly shifts to lesser-known figures such as Hetep Heres, Hatshepsut, Nefertari, and Arsinoe, each of whom made remarkable contributions to Egyptian society.

Hetep Heres, the mother of Pharaoh Khufu, is noted for her monumental burial site, which set the stage for future royal tombs. Hatshepsut, who ruled as pharaoh, is celebrated for her impressive architectural achievements and military leadership, demonstrating that women could hold power equivalent to men. Nefertari, the wife of Ramses II, is portrayed as a skilled diplomat who played a crucial role in political alliances, while Arsinoe is recognized for her ability to merge Egyptian and Greek cultures, enhancing Egypt's prosperity.

The discussion emphasizes that ancient Egypt was relatively egalitarian for its time, allowing women to achieve high-status roles and own property. The legacies of these women serve as powerful reminders of their contributions to a civilization that thrived for thousands of years, inspiring modern audiences with their stories of strength and capability.

Historian, Joann Fletcher explores the hitherto downplayed role that women took in the running of state and, indeed, in shaping every aspect of life in Ancient Egypt. Perhaps unassumed by most, the ancient Egyptians were unique in their attitude to sexual equality with women holding the title of 'Pharaoh' no fewer than 18 times, while there were also female doctors, tutors, prime ministers and priestesses. Focusing on women of royalty such as Pharaoh Hatshepsut and Queen Nefertari, as well as women of high profession such as Lady Peseshet, the earliest female doctor known to the world, Fletcher reveals an ancient civilization unparalleled in its sexual equality.
